Well, he must've listened well since he's doing great.
Bad luck for Manuel as he broke his engine and is unable to source up a replacement, possibly even for Qatar

Helder had issues with his stator yesterday and started way behind today, but seems to have caught the majority and is currently leading. James West had a tumble yesterday and bent his nav tower and therefore had an electrical fault that wouldn't allow the bike to start.

I get to wake up at 5 in the morning and let the bikes off starting from 6, then wait a few hours until around midday and greet them when they return, when I get a chance to hear all these stories first hand

Hiya Paul . No parade pissing here. Fishy finished 4th today and Sean finished ... what ... 7th today? Overalls now 7th and 8th for Sean and Fishy respectively. Not a bad effort from Fishy for his first crack at the UAE dunes I'd say.

Nav error?

Nav error?
Maybe, or perhaps he went tumbling off a dune crest? Either way, its interesting he is not showing his usual dominance.

From the pics that sand looks super soft.

Awesome that you are starting the rally! We expect lots of detail in your next report!

Tony, can you tell us why they have such huge penalties, engine change perhaps?

If I remember correctly, from experience that it pains me to recollect, the penalty for failing to finish a stage is 12 hours! Failing to start a stage is 100 hours! (In my first year year I didn't finish day 1, didn't start day 2 and copped 112 hours of penalties. Then completed days 3, 4 & 5 no problems. Harsh lessons in that thar desert!)

\very harsh lessons.

I remember when Sean was leading day 5 overall, leading the stage too then went A.o.T and ended up in hospital.
Look at Sam, cracking start but i reckon he got on the bike too early. Imagine no bike routine for a couple of months then loose the cast and 5 days later 3rd on a international rally stage. (no fault of his own just too quick and not letting the body heal).

cheers

Matt could catch Sean, only 8,5 minutes ahead but he also has Casteu on his tail 1.11 behind.

Yeah he could do but I hope he doesn't push for that. The nav shouldn't be too bad for the run back into AD but even the locals get caught out sometimes - a'la Steve Collie copping 3 1/4 hr penalty by missing a Waypoint and a CP a couple of years ago and of, course Sean's (in)famous mishap while pushing for the front. Hopefully Fishy cruises in and is happy with a top ten finish on his first ever ADDC.

Was one of your tips - don't go out for a quiet pint with the boys from Oman before you start?

Actually it was!. How's things with you mate? You still in Oman? I thought you'd moved on from there.
I'm working on coming back to the ADDC in 2013, very likely with another couple of guys from Perth.
