Analyzing Ryan Dungeys get off Southwick 2012

Ryan Dungey came off the bike right in front of me Saturday at Southwick.

Here is my analysis of it and an attempt to illustrate how fast things are happening out on a motocross track and how fast things can go wrong and even more so when it happens to the current best rider on the planet at the speeds he rides.

Southwick is not a spectator friendly track and an even less photography friendly track. The fences are high and finding a spot with good viewing where you can shoot over the fence is no easy task. I found the small downhill right before the straight before the finish line jump offered a good vantage as the fence wasn't a factor as you had to look up somewhat. The riders had a hard right just before the descent and some of them basically came out of the turn and leaped down the hill.

And some of them kind of came down as more of a hill and less of a jump.

Like this.

But Dungey, and to be fair a few others but Dungey in particular, along with Musquin on the 250s, came off it practically every time, like this.

freaking guy is no joke.

couple that with some soft ruts awaiting their arrival in just a few feet it isn't the place for mistakes, but Dungey made a small one and even though he saved it, he still lost it due to the ripple effect. Lets have a look.

he came off the hill one time and somehow got out of shape and the bike suddenly became unruly.

keep in mind things are happening very. quickly.

in the blink of an eye we're 2 bike lengths further and on the way to regaining control.

next frame (and the nikon is shooting about 5 frames per sec) and he's on the gas and gravity and momentum are clearly at work.

these are the ruts that tripped him up. shot later in the day, I got down on my knees and shot through the fence.

he even said post race that he cross rutted so..what can you say? I think the whole thing resulted from the miscue at the top of the hill and like I said even though he saved it it was all one continuous blur and took all of about 2 seconds.

He still won the event and should have one hell of a pile of titles before he's done. if you haven't seen these guys ride, you should. they are the best there is and motocross is...the shizzle.

thank you and god bless anyone who ever made it through ruts cringing the whole way.

I've ridden there once. The ruts get deep in that sand

Go to a National and you will be blown away how fast they go. I raced Amature day on Sunday @ Red Bud. My buddy said.."Dam Bro...You look SLOOOWWWW out there..LOL" I said of course I do...We watched the Pro's kill it yesterday!

I went 7-7 for 5th overall in my class (+30B)..I wasn't slow. The track was so rutted from the 700 plus racers on the day that it really sucked. Parts where more like an Endurocroos track..LOL But I doubled Larocco's leap and jumped the table (80') by the Flag. I couldn't imagine how hard you would have to hit the "Leap" to triple it..

Wow. Just wow.

And I bet you cursed yourself for losing focus just before he dropped it!
