My journey to V2R and other racing nonsense

Well my plan worked. Took second place in my class. Apparently I passed everyone in the pits. I'm glad to have that race behind me though. I doubt I'll do it again. I prefer the longer, less sandy less mx track races. ;)

I went in last Wednesday and had a little surgery on my hand. I've had a piece of cactus festering in the side of my right hand since the Rhino Rally. It was hitting a nerve and causing numbness and a sharp burning pain in my knuckle. I tried a few times to get it out, and my wife tried once. She broke out the razor blade and tweezers and I broke out the whiskey. She could get a hold of the cactus spike but it would break when she pulled on it. Those things are like fish hooks.
I finally couldn't take it any longer and had a doctor go in and get it.
Yea. A new scar.

I could have saved you a trip. I have a xacto knife, Novocaine, and stitch kits. I'm not a doctor but play one when I need stitches.

My friends wife gave me a bunch of stitch kits when she found out I sewed up my foot with a needle and thread. Crappy thing was it was dull needle so it took a set of pliers to get it to go through my skin. Much easier with the right tools. :)

I picked up a couple new supporters.
Oneal and SteelMX optics
I just received some new goggles from SteelMX and I'm excited to give them a try. They are extremely comfortable and the multiple layers of foam should do well at keeping out the dust. The goggle i received are the SMX Tempered.

Here is my review of my SMX goggles. So far I'm not impressed. Took them on a 80 mile jaunt through the desert and although the fit was comfy and they did an average job keeping the dust out, the lenses are terrible. After about 30 miles we stopped for a break and when I removed the goggles I wiped the outer lens with my finger but when I did the same on the inside it felt as though I had 800 grit paper on my hands. The inside completely spider webbed. Every other goggle I have I have been able to do the same thing and no issues. Hell, I've thrown my goggles to strangers in pits and they've used paper towels and not scratched my lens. It's almost like the outer of the lens is treated but the inner is not. I've sent off numerous emails to SMX but every one gets sent back. I also sent a facebook message with no response I tried to call and was able to leave a message so I'll see if I hear back. I hope this was just a bad lens and they stand behind there product. Last night I pulled out all my goggles, Ariete, Oakley, Smith, and SMX and cleaned all the lenses the same way and the SMX got even worse.

Yet another dreary race day. All loaded and ready to head out to the 4th race in the USRA desert series. The Firebirds hare and hound in Jericho.
First loop is 38 miles and the second loop is 35 miles and rain. At least no dust ;)

Well that ended up being a pretty dry race after all and still not much dust. Clouds had parted over the area of the course and I only hit a little rain during the second loop and when I was loading the bike back up. The first loop was 32 miles and the first part was sandy whoops. I got an okay start, about mid pack, but dumped the bike twice in the sand. I was passed by a few bikes but was able to recover and get most back except one rider on a Suzuki who I chased to the pits. When I got to the pits I took some fuel and choked down a energy bar. I felt better on the second loop and was not passed by anyone except a team rider. I was okay with that, he was fresh from not doing the first loop.
And just when I started feeling good and riding strong the finish line was on the horizon.
The bike did well and i didn't get hurt and I got a 4th place finish and a trophy. Not a bad day at all.

Knolls it is. Just getting all my stuff together and waiting for fellow riding friend Steve to pick me up. Should be a good day 80 deg and sun. I'm also working on a new pre-race diet. During my last two races my blood sugar dropped shortly after the start and it's not until the end of the race that it comes back but all that time I feel weak and not focused. I'm starting today with a bowl of oatmeal I got at Whole Foods. It's nothing but oats grains and nuts with raisins and bananas. I've been going about it wrong. I've been consuming more protein than carbs. So I hope between the tree bark oatmeal this morning and a powerbar and an Ensure (yeah I know I'm old) about an hour before the start I hope to have more energy.
I'll also have a banana or a bar in the pits if needed.
Time to get loaded. I'll post more after the race.
