It's unofficial, you are not allowed to stand on your pegs.

Often in heavy traffic, I stand on my pegs to see over the SUV's. Often I stand up just to circulate the blood through my gluts. And sometimes I stand up just for the heck of it.

Well on my commute home today I was surrounded by SUV's and stood up for a clearer picture of what lay ahead, at about 30mph. Unfortunately I had the local roller behind me who was out of donuts and lookig for something to do.

He starts flashing his lights and buzzing his siren at me. I turned around (while still standing on the pegs) to see what all the fuss was about, and he started shaking his hand at me like this

So i sit down. I don't want to piss him off since my brake lights are no-op and my mirrors and useless (which is why i didnt see him in the first place). He rolls up next to me, forcing me to make room in my lane for him, and shouts out the window

Cop: "Do want a ticket!?"
Me: "Do you want me to pull over?"
Cop: "Whadaya standing up for?"
Me: "So I can see better."

Cop puts his foot down, cuts off the car beside me, and weaves his way through heavy traffic ahead of me on his merry way to Krispy Kreme. :ymca

So I never had a chance to ask him...
"Am I really not allowed to stand on the pegs?"

Did you have your pants off like that women on the bike getting pulled over by a cop in that picture I haven't seen yet? Anyone have a link to that picture?

Fatchance, or the visual of the girl on the bike?

I think you may have just freaked the cop out ncfitton, I doubt there is a law against standing up.
You may want to get those "equipment violations" fixed before you go standing up again though.

Cool2

Would like to get a cite for standing on my pegs...at any speed. Would also like to get one for wearing earphones while driving my truck. In Ca. you get a license even if you're deaf, but you can't wear earphones. as for the peg thing I don't know of any section other than reckless and i'd love to argue that one.

had to drink wine with friends for 5 hours and eat good indian food

definately agree with fixing my bike before i try it again. previous owner swapped rear light for LED variety - not sure if it doesnt support brake light or if both switches are broken. will investigate. will order dual star mirrors tonight while i'm drunk.

i've really got better things to do than fight dumb ass cops in court but it seems like if i'm not violating any other law i should be allowed to stand on the pegs.

maybe it was that trail of donuts i was dropping behind me as i rode home

to quote msf "standing on the pegs is not just for stretching stiff muscles." They even have you stand on the pegs in thier exercises.

Laugh Standing up...

I stand up all the time...at speeds up to 65 mph easily.

I've never had a problem with any LEO's...but you never know. There could be some obscure law on the books somewhere!

PS I have wondered about this myself.

That's funny. I had a CHP shake his finger at me in Pleasanton for wearing earphones under my helmet (OK he asked and I told the truth.)

I haven't been counseled for standing on the pags anywhere in the Bay Area though.
