more gear please

dear sirs,

cruising along this morning going 145km/hr i think (like i do every morning) that another gear would be ever so nice. watching the tach at 7 doesn't give me the warm fuzzies at all. so whdaya think? should i take out my reverse gear and change it into another forward? dat'd be really nice. what tooth combenation would be best to give me a 150km/hr cruise speed at around say 6 on the rev ticker.

Yeah, I hear you. That is the one LC4 issue that I find it hard to believe has not been addressed by KTM over the years (a 6th gear). I have relegated myself to running a 17T C/S for highway which gives about 93 indicated or 86MPH GPS @6,000RPM and if I'm gonna do single track, I can just flip the swing arm adjuster plates around and pop in a 15T without having to do any chain adjustments. I have not tried the 15T on this particular bike but, I figure you lose about 5-6 MPH top end for each tooth you go down on the C/S. So that should top out at about 74 MPH with the 15T.
Only down side with the 17T is you are stuck in first on trails and sometimes with strong head winds its hard to get the bike to get to 6,000 RPM.
Much smoother for highway and I'm not over reving for passing ( I try to keep my RPMs at or below 6,000 RPM usually the sweet spot is between 5,500-6,000)

145. Was that down hill with a tail wind.

This CHART should work. All you need to change is the primary and 5th gear drive ratio's,
max rpm (6000) I would say tire size is close enough and then just play with the front and rear sprocket no's to get yer speed.

Ok then.

Curious, can someone look in there manual and tell me what the primary drive ratio and 5th gear ratio is.

Yeah, since 5th gear never gets used off road, why not make it a super tall highway gear?

Mack makin it look easy again!

somebody did the leg work on this and its a no go right? no room for a sixth and i thought no room for a taller highway gear. but the second part is less definate.

did you change yer sprokets deary?

ok.... 5th gear is 22:18 which gives a ratio of 1.2

it has stock sprockets on it whatever that means... ktm lists front - 14 - 15 - 16 - 17. and rears of 38 - 40 - 42 - 45 - 48 - 50 - 52... since i haven't gone and counted mine i aint sure what it is (anyone know what they adventure stock ratio is?) ... think i'm goona buy a set of 17 - 38's for my street wheels..

does the 17 tooth front have any clearance issues?

I simply added fang on the front and dropped two off the rear. This combo allows the chain length to work with both gearing options, stock/dirt and cruise friendly, if that matters.

So..
Stock/dirt = 16/42
Cruise = 17/40

You'll need to take a belt sander to the removable case protector to fit the larger countershaft sprocket, or order up the one that they use on the duke (ktm part # 58430047000).

When you hit the technical dirt stuff, just flip the adjuster plates around on the rear of the swing arm and pop in a 15T for single track action.
Flanny talked to a KTM tech who told him that the bike will run indefinitely at 5-6,000 RPM but, if running higher than 6,000RPM for extended periods you should tighten service intervals. Do you really NEED any more than an 86MPH speeding ticket??
20+ MPH over the limit and they can call it "reckless driving".
I figure if this bike went any faster I would not have a license anymore as I get enough tickets as is.

Loaded my man, I'm glad you brought this up. I am missing one toof on my rear and it's time to change der sprocketz and chain.
I had planned on replacing with:

17:44 for street
16:44 for dirt

These ratios put it just below and above stock, respectively. I want to use a Stealth rear sprocket and the smallest I can find is a 44.

Drive Guru's: Would I be able to run these combo's using the same chain and just make adjustments when I swap?

I use the 15T front sprocket a lot as I do as little pavement as possible. 5th at 5000rpm = 100kph or 62mph. (gps speed = speedo wheel size set to 19") It tops out at about 155kph.

I can't imagine using a 17 offroad. Just above idle must be like 20mph.

Just went and checked. With 17/42 and Pirelli MT21s, it's doing 85mph at 6k in 5th, give or take a couple mph depending on the wind. As a data point, it'll cruise at 60mph at about 4400 rpm.
