Actually you can get lost wages for up to three years. UM in Michigan is for "noneconomic" damages only, i.e. pain and suffering. The problem for motorcyclists is that motorcycles are not motor vehicles under the statute. You only get coverage if a car is involved in the accident.
But I agree, UM is important. In Michigan we have a problem with a large number of uninsured drivers. I heard like 1 in 4 cars in Detroit are uninsured.
