Oilhead Centerstand Lube Mod.

BMW provides a Pin Grease Gun hole on the Sidestand to lube it on scheduled services. (every 6000 km)

For some reason they don't do it for the Centerstand.......

I got tired of my Centerstand hanging up every couple of years and needing dis-assembly to re-lube it.

The pictures below show an easy mod you can do to turn lubrication into a 1 minute job.

The pictures below show a GS Centerstand but I'm sure it will work on all the other models too.

I have done this on a few bikes now with great success. The 1/6" hole on the opposite side is so the grease can escape and you can visually see that an adequate amount has been applied.

Mod Notes:
The 3 "O" Rings on each side may need replacing if badly worn
Clean up any Rust on the I.D. of the bores as well as the Shafts.
Deburr holes so "O" rings don't get cut upon assembly

Why not instal standard automotive grease fittings (Zerk) and give these points a squirt of grease now and then.......

Why complicate things?
Now you need to drill a larger hole, (weakening the forging) you need a tap and a grease fitting not to mention there is not much meat there to begin with.........

This looks cool, Addict. I've wondered about it myself. I agree with you about not using a zerk due to weakening the stand. How long have you had this?

I replaced the 6 o-rings, lubed everything in there and the centerstand still needs a push when the bike is on it's wheels. I guess I got used to doing so and it's not a problem anymore :)

Have you got the inner return spring installed? If not, I have found the stand will need a 'nudge' to start the return.

I did the initial mod on my own machine 8 years ago.
I did this post because I was in the process of doing another machine and had the camera handy.

Why are you drilling a 1/16 and then a 3/32? It looks like they are in the same place? Is the 1/16 a pilot?

I just wanted some restriction to force the grease everywhere before exiting. Ideally one could drill a smaller hole but most inmates don't have a bit smaller than 1/16".
The 3/32" fill hole is for the needle to have something to seat to so it will stay on the hole.
