1985 CR 500 Honda Questions

Hello,

I am looking for a bike to rip around the fireroads around my house. I've owned quite a few 500CC 2-strokes, including an 84 CR500, and an 04 KX500. As I recall, the 85 is supposed to be one of the faster 500's from that era. Based on my memory, the 84 "felt" faster than my 04. However, the KX was nicer to ride at speed.

Question time;

I keep hearing that the 85 was the meanest of the bunch. Is that so, and if so, why? Are there any real reasons or is it just myth? Also, are there anything unique to the 85's that I should be aware of? I have heard of a failing water pump housing etc. What else is there? I don't want something I can't get parts for.

And no, I don't want a modern 450!

The '85/86 CR was peaky and made power by the bucketfull. Makes for a fun ride if yer up to it.

An FMF Gnarly pipe/silencer tames it w/o losing any power. It was the hit coming out of the basement that made the 85/86 CR500s such monsters and the pipe smooths out the transition.

I did find a bike and it has an aftermarket pipe on it. It needs some mild TLC but should be fine otherwise. I will post up when I know more. This weekend is scheduled for pick up of the bike.

Had a '85 and a '90 .
The '85 did have a monster motor . Off idle top fuel dragster. But a weak rear brake (drum) and poor suspension.
The '90 was much more refined. Smoother motor , better brakes and shock. The forks still needed work.

For me being a caveman who runs wants to roost and ride a wheelie it should work! I know myself well enough that I will have a CR graveyard in a year anyways... I do that with all of my stuff. I just need to get a start.

To put things in perspective, my current ride is a rock-reliable XT350. So this will be a change. And suspension...........what suspension.

The CR is a much better fit for my needs.

I appreciate all of your input, and it sounds like the 85 will work. I highly doubt I will work it hard enough to hurt it.

I think it will work me!

You can always get some cheap later xr forks for it, straight bolt onto the 85 from any 400/600/650l

They can be had for dirt cheap!

It actually needs a new rear shock. What models will swap in with minimal effort? I'm pretty handy and have fab abilities, but I would rather drill a hole a little bigger and bolt something on.

Is there a recommended year and model of bike for a rear shock upgrade?

IIRC the 85 and 86 had the most compression, they then changed the head and ign in 87.

then in 90(?) the motor got almost smooth


I had a 87 and a 95.

While the 87 sure felt faster the 95 was a lot easier to ride.

The ergo's after 92(?) are better too

I ice raced an '85 and my primary issue was starting it when cold. Later models had better ignition systems that I believe provided a more powerful spark at kick over speeds as well a a redesigned kickstarter, and were orders of magnitude easier to fire up. I often had to tow start mine with a 4-wheeler and use a shot of ether to make mine go when it was super cold.
