Help, early can-am experts please!

My '75 250 mx-2 came like the e-bay pic I'm enclosing. I thought it had incorrect shocks and forks because all the pics I've seen the '75 mx-2 had silver forks and black shocks. I'll enclose a pic of the bike the way I thought it should be from someones collection. Can anyone tell me what is correct for a '75 mx-2? Thanks for the help. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Can-Am-1975-...US_motorcycles http://www.earlyyearsofmx.com/CanAM2501975.html

Hi Rick! MX2. Awesome. Lots of white tank CanAms at Unadilla VMX every year. I had a MX1. I belive this is a MX2 based on the handlebar with the V cross bar. My MX1 did not have that. This was for sale in 2012 at Unadilla Rewind. Looks to be relatively unmolested.

You should get to Unadilla VMX this June!

The MX-2 had Betor forks with 6.5" of travel, and were polished alumium, not painted. The rear shocks were Girlings and were black bodys with black springs. The MX-1 had Betors with 6" of travel and Girlings with 3" of travel. The big change came with the MX-3 which had Marzocchis of 8" of travel.

Here is a good link for info on Can-ams: http://www.canned-ham.com/

Welcome to the club.

Thanks, since this post I've heard from Al Roberts and RTR moto both telling me the black forks were an upgrade and the yellow shocks were something of an upgrade also you could get from the dealer. The black forks have bombardier on the outside top of the sliders and the dust cap says Betor. I also saw a pic of an mx-3 on canned ham website that looked like the same non-leading axle forks. I know my ;75 had the polished forks because I have a picture of it. But I had Moroney's in Newburg NY do a layed down gas girling setup on it so the pic I have just shows them. I'll try to put a link to the picture from canned ham. http://www.canned-ham.com/index.php/...kes/mx-series/ I'll probably just clean up the forks and shocks I have for now and wait to try and find the silver forks and black adjustable pre-load girlings. Thanks for the info.

OK, The link just takes you to the page, but if you go to the first pic in the mx-3 category, you'll see the forks on that bike look like the black ones I have.

Hey Scott! No doubt about Unadilla rewind this year for me. I finally got done with my house ,so I tore into my bike projects. I got the '79 husky done. I think I heard the bars on the mx-2 called "Gary Jones" style bars. I guess he had a hand in the design? Those were one of the things I made sure the bike still had before I bought it. Those and the stove pipe exhaust were part of what made that bike unique. Looks like a descent one on e-bay right now. See you at 'dilla this summer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231460709330...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Some additional information on the Can Am forks and shocks on the MX2 ...
The black Betor forks were an upgrade you could buy from Can Am at the time
to give the MX2 longer travel as opposed to the aluminum colored fork. If I remember correctly it upped the travel from 6 1/2 " to 8" and was a bolt on
mod. Those yellow shocks (if I remember correctly) were also a factory upgrade to go along with forks to keep the geometry correct and still allow the longer travel. This all happened before the MX3 came out to try and stay competitive in the suspension battles.
So basically the MX2 in the pic with the black forks is factory correct I believe. Anyone out there have any more info?
Sam

Thanks for the input. I actually measured the fork travel after removing the caps and springs and got that exact 8" travel you mentioned..I painted the yellow shocks black before doing this research because I wanted to get the bike to look like the brochures. But now I think I'll go get some school bus yellow and put them back to their original color. Now that I know that would still be period correct.
