nothing wrong with a sextant - if you know how to use it
although along with your thought the Naval Academy has given up teaching celestial navigation

I figure the first two things would be to pull the motor and send it out West for the upgrade to smooth out the vibes and the second would be a set of Flexx handlebars to help kill the vibes even more. I still want one though....

I have one of the small ones, but I think I saw you need a 6" for the event...

Not thinking I'll be picking up one of the rally kits anytime soon...$$$$ (a good GPS costs less)

Actually they come up on ADV regularly.

Just put a small LED or chem light inside for night use and your all set.

Early Season Fly N' Ride

Here's a cross-post:

This is being hosted by GS 'Riders of' Desert Adventure & Rawhyde

Quote:
(DRAFT Plan): This adventure is essentially a self-guided trip with some off-road group rides (ie: not a tour with guides, just incredible riding with friends). The plan allows time to find side roads and sights along the way at your own pace in smaller groups. Sat 3/8/14-Fri 3/14/14 in California.

The adventure starts at the RawHyde Ranch for some training, practice, and group bonding before travelling through Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park on and off-road. Michael and Dawn rode these areas last year and came up with the idea of this trip to share them. Bring your friends, camping gear, and cameras!

Friday 3/7/13, optional: Arrive one day early and take the full two day Intro to Adventure course at RawHyde before joining us for the adventure. 3/8/14 Saturday, welcome to sunny California! Travel to RawHyde Adventure Camp in Castaic. Arrive by 4pm to meet the group, settle into a bunk, be introduced to your GS for the week, enjoy cocktail hour and a hearty meal.

3/9/14 Sunday we enjoy a big breakfast before a full day of skills work for all levels. We'll break in the late afternoon to pack up camping gear and get the bikes ready for departure. Cocktail hour, dinner, and a campfire at night. 3/10/14 Monday we pack up and head for the desert! Our destination is the Hole in the Wall Campground in the Mojave National Preserve. The most direct route is about 250 miles. If you prefer backroads and twisties, the RawHyde crew can tell you about some fun roads to explore. The last 10-15 miles into the campgound are unpaved graded roads in the Mojave Preserve. Once arrived, stretch your legs on the Rings Loop trail from the campground that includes petroglyphs, livestock, scrambling, and cool rock formations.

3/11/14 Tuesday morning we'll head out from the Hole in the Wall Visitor Center for our first group ride to explore a section of the historic Mojave Road. This will probably involve some technical riding in sand and who knows what else. A day of adventure! (If that doesn't appeal to you, there are miles of incredibly nice unpaved graded roads from the campground. Head east to Nipton for a true one-horse town experience, or south from the campground to ride on that classic, Route 66.) 3/12/14 Wednesday morning ride out of Mojave and head to Jumbo Rocks Campground in Joshua Tree National Park. The most direct route is about 120 miles. You will need to stop at the 29 Palms or Joshua Tree visitor center to get a park pass. You can fill water containers at the centers (small fee <$1). There is no water at the campground, so bring in a minimum of 4-6 liters. If you're done with camping, there are motels/hotels in Joshua Tree. Early afternoon: Leave from entrance to Jumbo Rocks Campground to ride Geology Tour Road to Berdoo Canyon Road. Paved roads back up to Joshua Tree where we can find a good meal, fuel, and hot showers. If you choose not to join the group for the afternoon ride, the park has many interpretive signs, short hikes, incredible scenery, and photo ops to offer.

3/13/14 Thursday we'll explore some of the park's backcountry roads. Head out on pavement then pick up the Pinkham Canyon Road for the morning and then back up on Black Eagle Mine Road, see the NPS descriptions and maps. We'll end up in 29 Palms in the afternoon where we can find some food, fuel, and/or camp supplies. 3/14/13 Friday our trip together is over. For people returning bikes to RawHyde today, the direct route is about 200 miles. Be there by noon to enjoy a good lunch and hot shower back at camp. If you are keeping your rental to continue your journey, have a great time! Included in price: -One day skills workshop at RawHyde Adventures (mandatory to participate in Tues, Wed, and Thurs rides), lodging, and 6 meals with beverage. -Packing list and links to area information -Facebook group page for trip participants to communicate and share pictures Bike and Gear Rental: -See http://www.advrentals.us/ for rates. -All brands welcome if you have your own bike On Your Own: -Travel -Camping, park fees, fuel, food outside of RawHyde. Preferred group size 15 riders max. For more information, e-mail Dawn at dawnshein@hotmail.com

Spring Ride from Romney, WV

You may want to add this to the list of things to wanderlust about:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=939780

I have a cabin (indoor plumbing and lots of beer ) in a community just south of Romney. More than happy to host a few SM-ADVers than need a place to camp.
