GARMIN 590 and beyond

may be of interest to some - from the LD rider list

Living in KC we are home to Garmin. Occasionally some of their Reps come to
local motorcycle events. This happened this past Saturday. Here are my
questions.

1. Are any of the new Garmins going to have better screens like the 478?
Yes the 590's screen will be as good as the 478.

2. Are you aware that long distance motorcycle riders are still using the
478, and that resale prices are remarkably high for an out of date unit.
Yes he uses a 378 along with the new ones.

3. Are you aware that all waypoints can't be seen as you zoom out, past the
478? Yes, the designers did not want all the other features such as
topography blocked by the waypoints.

4. One of the features LD Riders love on the 478 is the ability to see all
waypoints when riding Rallies. Is there any thing that can be done to make
this a feature in the future? You can designate up to 3 categories to
always be seen. This sounded promising so I asked, zoomed all the way out?
No. Probably no further than on the other Zumos. Oh.

5. Here's one I didn't see coming. No Sirius/XM option on the 590. Will
that be introduced soon? No. Sirius/XM will no longer license Garmin to
build the Antenna/Radio as before. Sirius wants only to sell through the
manufacturers. Whoa, what? He said they were selling around 50,000 units
annually with a radio that could be used on motorcycles, but no new ones
will be. There will be some on the very large Marine Radios, but not on
ones small enough to be used on motorcycles. Sirius wants to control the
whole interface. Much more interested in selling to OEM who produce
millions of vehicles to the 50,000 or so units Garmin was selling.

There will be a 3.5MM plug and a USB plug on the unit. So a phone and a
Sirius radio could be used as a secondary music source or anything with a
3.5 MM plug. (Although I don't see this on the Garmin site)

Any way, if you like your Sirius without another source, you may want to
stock up on those 478's and Zumo 665's.

I think the top vote for the team name is: Maryland Moto Sloths; "We may not get there fast but we'll get there."

So what's our plan? What wave are we in? Where are we meeting? Where are my pants?

I'd like to knock this out as early as possible.

I was planning on arving at Budds Creek about 1 hour prior (e.g 0930ish). As Budds Creek is a race track, it's a bit in the country. Depnding on which way you are coming in from last food stop will be La Plata or the truck stop at the RT 301 Bridge.

PS Having pant issues here too--I ruined my pants last weekend at PaintBall.

Trying to get Mick to carpool down there.

Considering the injury/fatality reports on this one, I'm not gonna hesitate to go around an obstacle if I think the risk can't be assessed.

This one doesn't look like it has any electroshock, which is good, but it's hard to tell if they've got you dropping from any heights into water. Those are the ones I'm worried about - I don't feel like busting my wheels on landings I can't assess, nor do I feel like fighting off hypothermia.

Looks like a one stop shop; sushi, nails, and guns.....now all you need is a head shop.
