Lee Ranger District: Taskers Gap/Peters Mill Run OHV

All,

Tomorrow a buddy and me will be hitting the OHV trails in George Washington National Park near Shenandoah, VA. If anyone wants to come along it is a lot of fun. ~2hrs from Rockville, MD. The OHV trails are kind of technical in some aspects, have some single track that I tried to ride for a while but better suited for a smaller bike. We are planning an early start, ride there for a few hrs and return. Would recommend no saddle bags etc... let me know.

Based on the rain we've had here, I would say we probably need to postpone to another day.

Sorry.

Thanks J4S. I made it home from Cedar State Forest mountain biking. On the way home I stopped off at Bruce's and he gave me the bad news...

Good news is I have power and no impact here... To lazy to check Cobb Island.

BTW... Speed Channel is showing BMW sponsored superbike race if any are interested.

Loooong day Planned on Sunday, 2 Sept.

If the weather holds, we are probably going to do a dayride out to Dunkle Hollow, Long Run and home again. Tentative plans as follows: Riders up around 0530AM at WaWa. Arrive Dunkle around 0930. Leave dirt around 1400. Home around 1900ish.

All will be big bike friendly, and wheels will get wet.

Lee Ranger District: Taskers Gap/Peters Mill Run OHV

All,

I really enjoyed this ride, it is near Edinburg, VA. I took 495 -> 66W -> 81S (1hr 45min). The OHV trails are pretty rugged, the jeep trail is a couple miles long and offers a fair amount of off roading on a variety of terrain. It is rocky and not for novice off road riders. We took my F800GS and a 1150GSA down the road. I could go a lot faster than the 1150 but he lumbered along just fine. We both have modded suspension (full ohlins) and I took mine to the limit, even with it setup for off road (high rebound/dampening) I got my front suspension almost bottomed out. You can ride it slower and do just fine but the rocks get a little less forgiving when going to slow.

The single track trails are a little small for my 800, a big bike is a no go, but enduro models can run this well. I had no problem except for the tire ruts caused by ATVs which made front end tracking difficult in the sand. As mentioned earlier a lighter enduro would do great here, especially if you ever raced MX.

I hit this early both mornings and then road on Sky Line drive a little bit one day. All in all it is a good ride especially given the limit of public OHV land available.
