Does the 600 have a way to wire it directly to the bike, or is battery the only option?
Also, are free maps available for this unit or is Garmin the only source of maps?

Yes, the Montana has a powered mount, see post 5 for a picture. And you can get Open Street Maps that work well.

Off topic alert: I noticed a Clubman Gold Star in your sig. I've owned two over the years first was DBD34 GS/S 4246 with an RRT2 gearbox. Loved that bike and it only cost me $50. Purchase price, that is. Cost me a bit more over the years.

I'm in the hunt for a new GPS toy too. I had a 60Cx which died on me. Garmin quoted me > $200 to repair... so I am of the opinion I should just throw that money at something newer, bigger and better.

Really digging that this Montana unit can be put into 'nuvi' mode and yield what looks like 90% of the zumo/nuvi features with a couple button presses.

Now to wait to find one on sale. Looks like REI is having a 20% off deal for 'members'. That potentially brings the price for a 600 down to ~$415.

I was hoping that too, but the fine print excludes "anything with GPS technology."

Looks like GPS City is the best bet at $459.

Not that I'm suggesting you should stay with the 60Cx, but it shouldn't cost any more than $110 for a refurbished exchange, through the Garmin Out Of Warranty Plan. $110 is their flat rate for a 60Cx.

I had an REI dividend and the 20% card last weekend and stopped by REI. Noticed the fine print just as I was walking in the store. Asked about price matching and nearly got laughed out the door!!


Also was quoted by Garmin for the $110 flat fee to repair my 60Cx. Seems like they just exchange it for a refurb.

I bet the big dealers like GPSCity and GPSCentral will have sales on Easter weekend but if you buy now, they'll probably give you price protection anyway.

I bought mine on a Friday. The next Monday there was a sale on and initially GPSCity didn't want to give me the sale price until I suggested I could refuse the delivery and buy a second at the cheaper price, in which case they found a way to give me the deal price.

So if I was you, I wouldn't wait.

My 60CSX is only 18 months old, but I really wish I would have waited for the Montana. The large screen and the touch gizmo would be enough even at full price. Well, I gotta get another season out of the gear I have.
