David Casteu finished 2nd overall to Deprés in 2007 and has had a number of stage wins over the years. However, he had some bad luck in 2011 (riding for Sherco and hitting a spectator on the course) and again in 2012 (riding a Yamaha he was in 4th overall with only five days left in the rally until having major engine problems). I remember seriously wondering during the 2007 Dakar Rally if Casteu might beat Deprés for the title. He was that good. Now with a couple years on the Yamaha, maybe Casteu can regain some of his old magic. What do you think?

The other rider we have not discussed that also rides a Yamaha is Olivier Pain. This guy finished 9th overall in 2010 and 2012. He is clearly very skilled on a motorcycle and is aiming for a top five finish this year. He claims that last year he was not ready physically for the rally due to an injury, yet he still finished 9th. This year he was injured again earlier in the season but claims that his bike is lighter and faster and believes that he can do much better than 9th place. Any thoughts on his prospects as well?
Casteu is that good but for all his brilliance, for whatever reason each year he seems to have that one stage that bites him, usually through no fault of his own. He's one of my favorites and a good friend of Ludo who has been a very valuable resource for this forum. Casteu has struggled a bit without the full factory treatment from KTM.

Pain has been one of the "rest" of the riders. I would say that everyone in the top 50 is a riding talent, top 30 a real natural, the top 20, some of the best, the top 10, the absolute cream of the crop, but there is something about the top 2 or 3 that just puts them on an alternate plane. Not sure Olivier has shown the brilliance to rise from the cream of the crop to the alternate plane, but you are right to point them out, definitely ones to watch.

When KTM announced Caselli, they did mention that he was entered early on as a "just in case" entry.

If casual is good enough for JC, who has a hell of a lot riding on this race, then I'm comfortable with NATGATT.

Number 11 just seemed to be dressed up with no where to go. Like rocking up to a party in your tux when your everyone else is in thongs and shorts
I hope the JC doesn't fall off a cliff in this years event, otherwise we'll see rmhrc628 piled in on top of him...there's no doubt about it...

"Bromance"... till death do us part...

You might consider that Faria is a contracted rider (and like his Duplo team mate) appearance in the team clobber at all instances in (probably) part of the terms?

Regardless of the pro's and con's of ATGATT or NAGATT or whatever...

I noticed last year that the big teams all wore complete outfits at the ceremonial start, while a lot of privateers wore shorts and sneakers with their riding jacket. I can undestand privateers going about under-dressed, but I expect to see people with big company sponsorship wearing livery. That advertising "image" is what sponsors are paying for, isn't it?

THIS !

Why would "corporate entity XYZ" pay mega bucks for anyone to tool around looking like you are going to the f¤#%ing beach...

Want to be paid and kept like a professional... then act and present like one... at all times. "Sponsor maintenence 101".

Faria/Despres and co full marks... shorts and t-shirt crowd... not so much.

Rider #83 is Alex van Ginkel and is well versed in the art of riding with clogs. Rode with us in this years Safari (bike #12), but unfortunately had a big crash while in 4th (not while riding with clogs !!). and left a set for us to display in the shop...
