Daytona Bike Week 2012 not exactly dejavu

We used to live in Orlando, Florida and rode a Harley so attending Daytona Bike week was just a matter of riding 70 miles one way taking sights and sounds and coming back home for the night. We were younger and bold (and probably stupid) enough to ride without a helmet, let alone any kind of protection. Drinking couple beers was not a problem before riding home at night on a busy highway. However years passed, things changed and we learned from experience.
This is a trip we took from Charlotte, NC to Daytona, FL after being absent for 12 years.
After checking the weekend weather one more time on Thursday we decided to leave Charlotte a little late and spend the night at Jacksonville, FL where hotel prices are way more reasonable.

Fueling up the bike:

Cockpit:

Hydrating. It was an unseasonably warm day

We took I-77 South to I-26 East and as soon as we hit I-95 South we start seeing tons of bikes coming from Daytona. Mostly Harleys and some other brand's touring bikes and very few adventure style bikes. Surprisingly there were more bikes on trailers then people riding them. Pirates must be getting old .

Every stop we saw this:

After an uneventful 400+ mile ride we arrived at the Sargent factory at Jacksonville, FL. They had an open house and some specials going on for the Bike week but since we already have a Sargent sport seat on the bike , looked around a little bit and took a short ride to our hotel to spend the night.

Got up early, packed and ready to ride remaining 80 miles to Daytona:

Arrived just in time to watch the morning St.Patricks day parade:

Then drove to Main street to see what has changed troughout the years before the crowds start showing up.
Well apparently not much but some of the old building were gone and some new establishments came. The smell or should I say stench is still there though. The whole street smells like broken case of beer.

Early morning Main Street. Hub of Daytona Bike Week.

Daytona BMW-Ducati and Triumph dealership is only a short ride away from Main street.

We parked next to her siblings:

Ducati had a great set-up at the dealership. They had their demo truck there signing up people for 45 minute test rides (even two-up) on their Diavel. They were also serving free water, expresso and cookies.Oh and the girls.....

We took in the sights:

Diavels waiting for the test riders:

More sights:

and more:

Schuberth helmet rep was at the dealership. So we decided to test a C3 W for her. Rep was kind enough to let us take the helmet for an extended ride. She liked it a lot over her older Shoei and might end up getting one.

She also liked the Thruxton a lot:

I was able to sign up for the Ducati Diavel test ride but they were running a little late and we had tickets for the AMA Daytona 200 so we had to leave and go to Speedway.

It was a hotly contested race and four riders were neck to neck down to the wire. After the race we went down to the inspection area.

Joey Pascarella's race winning Yamaha YZF-R6:

Inspection area:

Then we went to check some manufacturer's tents hoping that we can do some demo rides. But it was very crowded and we were getting tired so we decided to go to our hotel and rest.

This is what we saw at the parking lot of the hotel:

This was sitting on the reception desk:

Trip back home on Sunday was a hot one, at one point I saw 92 on the bike's temp. gauge.Very unusual for mid March!!!

We made sure that we hydrated properly:

There were ton of bikes on I-95 N, but even more was being towed on trailers. It's kind of perplexing to see fully equipped touring bikes such as Goldwings or Glides being towed???? I can understand towing sportbikes, cafe racers, bar hoppers etc... but why would someone tow a touring bike or why not buy something else?

This was an interesting vehicle we saw at the lunch stop:

Despite heavy traffic we made good time and was back at home after 1000+ miles in 3 days.

yes, major bummer.

I had a press pass for the SX, but was not prepared to shoot in the pouring rain.

Shot during practice...
