Hey Big & Li'l Wans

Super RR as always

No shame in hugging the wall at chicken corner, though I have finally convinced my dad that a slightly wider line can be easier.

Hi rider914 - it's really cool that you get to ride with your dad! You guys are lucky to have that.

hey Sam

Day 4: 3/14/12 Total mileage 246
Part 1 - Panamint Springs - Swansea Grade - Salt Tram Summit Station - Cerro Gordo - S5 - back to Panamint
Part 2 - Titus Canyon

Our neighbors last night were 6 young French tourists, sleeping in a minivan.
I guess thatís a cheap way to stay in Death Valley - 6 people for $7.50.
They just sat in the seats and slept in their clothing.

I would have felt sorry for them, except that I had to wait for all of the girls to take their showers last night.
It wasnít just the French girls of course, there were other women hogging up the bathroom,
but I couldnít help but notice les filles when there were 5 of them and they took the longest monkey-fighting showers, ever.
And, judging by the amount of hair they left, this is their Cousine Itt.

Seriously, it was gross.

A hamster-sized gob of hair clogged the drain and there were more wads of hair plastered all over the shower walls. Eww.

<---------
these are supposed to be the 5 french hair farmers

This morning, we met some of Phil and Johnís friends.
Chuck and Sharron (pronounced the same as "sharon" with one "r")

We talked trails for a bit, and after hearing about yesterdayís loop, Sharron asked if we had ever ridden Swansea to Cerro Gordo.
We had never heard of it.

She broke out the map.
Apparently there are some steep areas and some people get turned around by the rock steps early on, but Sharron thought that we could do it.

She said I might have to walk the worst parts, but I was totally willing do that.
(as it was, I only had to walk a couple spots with ice and mud)

The highest point is 9200 feet, so a lot of this ride is usually snowed in.

We were lucky it had been a mild winter so far.

BigWan and I thought maybe we could all ride it together, but their group had plans already.
Oh. Okay.

Went to fill up at the gas station and met Dennis.

He has a 950 adventure, but left it at home. He brought his Husky 610 instead.

Trying out the 990ís taller S suspension...

We thought Dennis would be a good riding match with Phil and Johnís group, but not sure if they ever met up.

To Swansea
The only bad part of the ride is the highway. It took forever to get from Panamint to Swansea (on hwy 136).

Apparently, thereís a graded road to Cerro Gordo (from Keeler) and itís really boring.
You donít want that one.

Hereís Swansea (donít blink)

Turn here

Welcome sign

Look for this sign

And away we go!

Itís a little gravely and loose. Not too bad.

Interesting rock formations. Shale, I imagine.

A little glimpse of the Sierras

Letís see, just after that photo - ABOVE - (about 3-4 miles in) there were some rock steps.
I didnít have a chance to take a pic - I barely had time to grab Matt and hold on.

The steps were a really pretty blue-green so I wish I had a photo,
but it wasnít a good place to stop.

Some of those steps were pretty steep, so I imagine thatís where some people turn around.

Edit - I feel bad I don't have a shot of this section for you (really didn't plan on a ride report),
but I found one online - here.
Looks different than I remember, but that must be it.

I think this was just after the climb (looking back. Canít see much, sorry).

All those rocks + 2 cups of coffee =
it was a good spot for a water break and a group photo.

Away we go...

These rocks had a pretty purple tint to them

We loved the variety in this ride - so many different kinds of rocks, plants, trees, dirt...

Even touches of snow.

Just found your mucking fabulous motherbrother awesome RR . Thanks for sharing such great pics and I love your writing style. I hope I can keep up but if I don't get it I won't respond. . Me and my husband both ride, but I don't think I would like being the 2nd up. I guess I am a control freak for the throttle . I will be patiently waiting to read more of this RR, but in the meantime I think I will check out your other RR's.

Cripes

Swansea is not exactly easy peasy. No big deal on a small bike... but on a big bike... 2-up!
You guys make it sound like nothin

Maybe it was just really thrashed last time I did it

Yeah, thats what i'll tell myself

BTW...
On your way up, did you notice all the tram towers still standing? Some are very impressive.
Easy to miss if you've got your eyes locked on the trail in front.

Yeah, I'd rather play with snow than Monday-Friday snakes.

Maybe I'll skip White Mtn this summer and ride Papoose Flats>Swansea instead. I've been right there at Swansea before and had just clawed my way up the back of Cerro in the snow, just felt like a bad idea or something.

Excellent pictures and story, I'm really glad you decided to do a ride report!!

Hey M, isn't it funny how that works?
When we did South Park Canyon loop, we had a lot of white knuckle moments.
I felt so stressed out with the thick rock, steep steps, racing the sun, etc..
But it sounds like you and your dad had no problems.

For us, after South Park, Swansea Grade was pretty fun and, while not "easy," it had great flow.
We hit it early in the day, feeling fresh and carefree...
Of course, since the conditions change every year, maybe we did luck into especially nice washes/rocks.

I guess that's what keeps people coming back, again and again.

And, yes, we saw a number of towers on the way up - those old timbers are pretty sturdy, huh?
No pics, though. (as you mentioned, too hard to tear your eyes away from the trail )

Oh crap, I totally forgot about this post!
I thought I had already done this one. Whoops.

Day 4: 3/14/12 Total mileage 246
Part 1 - Panamint Springs - Swansea Grade - Salt Tram Summit Station - Cerro Gordo - S5 - back to Panamint, continued

We were really loving this ride. The trail was great, the weather was perfect, and there wasn’t another soul in sight...

The gorgeous views didn’t hurt, either

I don’t know why these panoramics are so tiny. I’ll have to ask matt.
Looking over Owens Valley and Owens Lake (with the eastern sierras in the background)

Gah! Snow.

Since we had to stop anyway, I took a photo.
I think this is Saline Valley.
(matt says Saline, I'm sure he's right)

I didn’t like the look of the rocks next to the trail. They were awfully sharp-looking.
It’s hard to tell from this photo...

Here’s what I mean - sharp!

Looking back at the snow. It was kind of slippy along the edge. Not my favorite.
I know, I know... "Make it your favorite! Make slippery snow your favorite!"

It was really pretty up here. Did I already say that?

Another tiny pano.
The photos are uploaded, stitched together, saved as tifs, and then uploaded again as jpgs. Something’s screwed up, somewhere.
Oh well.
What my photos lack in quality, I make up with sheer quantity.

Hey, here comes the tram!

Okay, NOW you're waiting for the Salt Tram post...
back soon...
