Thumb Rumor: KTM's new Adventure?

I hate to be that guy... you know, the guy who spreads a rumor with zero proof. But I may get some proof soon, so here goes:

According to a buddy of mine with connections to the company, KTM has an update to the 990 Adventure in the works. Not sure exactly when it's supposed to be coming out. But apparently, KTM finally got tired of watching BMW eat its lunch in adventure bike sales numbers, because this new machine is supposedly going to address EVERY MAJOR COMPLAINT, and even some minor ones, about the old version. Here is just some of what it's supposed to have -- no doubt this is not the whole list:

Easy-to-change oil!

Just one gas tank to fill!

No more chain adjusters seizing into the swingarm!

Super comfort, on road and off!

A side stand that isn't bolted to the engine case!

Silky-smooth fuel injection -- bye-bye, snatchy throttle!

And it still kicks ass off-road, just like always. Apparently there is also going to be an update to the styling, so this new Adventure is going to look as kickass as it rides.

Anyway, like I said, usually I WOULDN'T post something this until I could back it up, because baseless rumors are lame... but I just can't help myself, and my buddy says he thinks he can get me a photo of this beast in a few days!

I will post it here AS SOON AS I GET IT!

Stay tuned!

I think every manufacturer of adventure bikes claims the bullet points you listed, from the Multi to the KLR. I'll keep my hopes up but what sells are touring bikes with dual sport styling cues, not actual dual sport bikes.

Not how... but how long...

No doubt KTM wants to improve on it's aged old Adventure platform. But the question really is how long it will take from design to build.

The current Adventure had engine design of the LC8 going back as far as 1998 or earlier ( as an Aprillia motor) and the prototype of the 950 finally started showing it's face in 2000. Cycle World first featured the Adventure prototype on it's cover in 2001.

And the bike hit the market in the US in 2004.

And KTM hasn't been able to dramatically retool the bike since then... so I wouldn't hold my breath on anything happening anytime soon.

Whether it's actually a pic of the new bike or the SMT who knows.

The Powerpoint slide at the NA Dealers meeting showed a Adventure R 1090 for MY 2013 and a Adventure 1290 for MY 2014 but I wouldn't be surprised is the 1290 is more of a Super Tenere clone and the 1090R keeps the dirt feel alive.

Ah, not, maybe, for the USA market, but there is a 800cc coming according to my dealer. Parallel twin?

As long as they keep it simple and do go crazy with all flash new and expensive technology that can't be fitxed in the middle of no where if it fails. KISS.
No matter how good something it, there is always a failure point.

From what I'm hearing, that doesn't look like it at all. Chances are looking excellent that I'll have a clear photo in a couple of days according to my source -- assuming he gets to see the beast in person. All this spy stuff is exciting!

Anyway, KTM's idea behind this bike, on what I've heard, is that it is going to be the ULTIMATE adventure machine. It'll be beyond any doubt that the BMW GS Adventure isn't better IN ANY WAY.

If you have this thing, you will be on the world's finest adventure bike in EVERY possible aspect, full stop.

Photos soon... I hope!

I saw a bike that looks like that 205 link - here in Canada on Sunday.

No pics - no camera, but my heart jumped when I saw it, and then fell. Not quite what I had in mind for a followup to the ADV.

edit: it was more like the pic on the other thread when some guy has a video of the apparently new ADV.

Simply fixing the regular issues will be a major accomplishment and yet it is still the best available for the 50/50 ride. Nothing else compares.
