I'm your new orange-utang from jolly olde Sweden I've just bought a 07 990 ADV with some farkels and 20000 on the meter in LA.
I'm going to go south as far a possible if everything works out.
What do I need to bring?

I'm a bit long in the teeth and an old BMW hand, but it was time for a change and I could not get over final drive failure ideas in my head.
Whatever reason and remember that it's cheaper to change motorbikes than your SO, far cheaper.

- fuel pump filter kit
- Aluminium bash plate if you want to
- water pump shaft + seal replace every 15-20k kms

who knows the size for the ridiculously over prized filter O-rings?
Gonna buy them in Sweden for song; will Nitril be good enough?

Its the pump housing o-rings that are ridiculously priced. The filter o-rings are included in the filter kit if you buy it from someone like KTM-twins.

Mcmaster carries the required O-rings for the pump assembly. A search on this forum will get you the right part no. to order.

The oil filter cover o-ring is a 40mm x 2.5mm NBR (same as Buna N or Nitrile). The KTM p/n is 0770400025, the list price is less than $1.

Definitely a sidestand relocator. Check out the one from either CJ Designs or Black Dog Cycle Works. There are others. The BDCW is high quality. CJ Designs moves the entire sidestand back and away from the engine case -- just like the Dakar bikes.

Also, order CJ Designs water pump shaft. It is guaranteed for 36,000 miles, so you should be able to put one of those on and not have to worry about water in the oil for a very, very long time. The shafts are expensive but very much worth it.

If you are going to go into the waterpump to sort that before the trip, I would go ahead and change out the balancer shaft seal on the other side of the motor. Those typically start leaking around 30,000 to 35,000 miles. That results in oil getting pumped into your air intake. It's an easy fix, so might as well do that preventatively.

Lastly, I would recommend a Scotts metal oil filter. Finding the stock paper filters in the wild might be difficult when south of the border. It might be better to just pay the money to get the metal one so that you don't have to worry.

Definitely would get the side stand relocator, CJ Designs is by far the best IMHO, have one on my bike and am very satisfied!! I'm in Guatemala and use the SS filter, has been an awesome bike and am very satisfied with the results!! Also use the crash bars, they do the job. I love this bike and plan on putting many miles at home and afar!!! Good choice and welcome!!
