Exploring Alabama goes in search of cell service

I've been in these hills & hollers for almost 17 years. Rumors of a cell tower have been rampant for the past 10 years. Construction on the utility easement actually recently started. While out on the 950 this morning, I saw the construction crew. They are having major issues with access to Duffee Mtn., & have spent the last 10 days attempting to cut a 38% grade up the mtn.

I'm planning to go back in the morning to document how difficult the terrain is and take some more pics of Mary Gordon Duffee's final resting place.

38% grade on dirt is not a game.

This pic is a good example of what we will do together, on dirt.

Stay tuned.........

I went out early this morning in hopes of beating the construction workers.

They had parked a large loader sideways across the road to keep people out.

It was no problem.

Let's go look around.

DeBandi. I hope you found some good stuff.
A few days ago, we rode through a recent wildfire area.
Deep in the used-to-be-forest, a chimney.
I thought to myself-- I wonder what DeBandi has been up to...

So peaceful in the morning. No workers yet.

You can see the 38% grade they've been working on for the past several days

in the background just above my bike.

The terrain here is relentless. This topo shows just

how rough the local geography is.

Not sure I can

pull this hill on the 950....It's crushed stone for only about 50 yards. After that it's 2" of dust and large rocks...

Dave, if getting the nine fiddy up 38% is hard, let us know how hard it is to get it back down - on its wheels.

Good to see you're still out documenting this stuff. Keep it coming!

I found the terminus of the utility easement....

They spent three days on this for the foundation of the new tower. Remember, this is solid limestone....
