If You Didn't Do DV, What Did You Do?

There are hundreds of reasons people visit Death Valley but more to the point, there are probably thousands of reasons that people don't go there. The following is a ride report about five men that each had their own reason for not going to DV on this particular weekend and what they chose to do instead.

Johnson Valley.

Kap,Notmybikemodelname,Razr,Mxbundy & I met off 247 and the blustery winds convinced us to find a more sheltered area to explore.

This little arroyo fit the bill quite nicely, as NMBMN demonstrates.

And Razr

Razr wisely opted not to top off his 17.5 gallon gas tank for this ride. He soon discovered the need for some sort of anti-slosh in-tank foam beause when the fuel sloshed to the left side of the tank, the mighty 520 became very unstable and difficult to keep upright!

Unfortunately when the gas sloshed to the right side of the bike, it had a similar effect.

Popping out of the protection of our mini-canyon we found the wind was still too gusty for our tastes so we searched for and found a new form of shelter.

Kap must have been very cold because he just barged on in without even knocking.

Rejuvinated by our short break at what Mxbundy thought was an old "fishing village" we headed up to investigate the terraced hill behind it. From the shape of it and the proximity to the "village", I'm fairly certain that it was a giant rice paddy for growing rice. After all, nothing goes better with fish...

Just as we didn't find any tuna carcasses in the "village", neither was there much evidence...OK there was no evidence that this terraced hillside was for growing rice. But, it was a hoot to ride around on.

Having recently returned from his victorious racing trip to Florida, Bundy was still in race mode. Seeing NMBMN ahead of him, he charges down this rock scree slope at about 30mph with both wheels locked and still accelerating!

Razr goes to pass Bundy on the outside...

But loses the front end on the slippery slope.

Unable to find his line in the rock rhythm section, NMBMN goes down allowing Bundy to make the pass and Razr to gain gound on him.

NMBMN completes the special test section as Bundy tries in vain to better my score on Angry Birds.

So that about sums up what we did instead of going to DV. There were a couple other "things" that happened during the ride that I've left out but Razr will probably be more than happy to tell you all about it... with photos.
BTW Rob, thanks for saving the day. I will never say anything bad about Rekluse clutches again.

Fun group, thanks guys.

Although...
This is my first time riding with Kap and while he's a great rider and nice guy and all, he is a little . Seem like everywhere we went, he thought it was about mining. "It's not a fishing village, it's a mining camp" or "Let's go up this mine road" or "This is a mine not a rice terrace!" Here he is in front of this cave yelling "It's a mine"

That was a fun fun ride yesterday. That loose rocky slope was easy compared to picking a line through the rocks at the bottom

I'll take one day of yesterdays riding over four in DV any day.

That old mine is a good Erzberg testing ground............................................ ......And at the top, the views are for miles and miles in every direction.
