Opinions and advice wanted: Canadian Maritimes

Hi all. I'm considering a trip down East next June. I was thinking of two possible routes:

A ride around the perimeter of Nova Scotia, taking in the Cabot Trail, Evangeline Trail and Lighthouse route. Or...

Cabot trail, then ferry to Newfoundland (Port Aux Basques) and a ride up to Gros Morne.

A few details:

I've got two weeks, but I'd be riding two-up with my wife, so daily mileage would be limited to 500 km or so. To save a couple of days, I was thinking of shipping the bike from Toronto to Halifax, flying out, then riding home.

Thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

Halifax is a must see. We stayed in the hostel which is friendly and clean and right in downtown. I was able to park my bike in a secure parking garage adjacent to the hostel

RPM cycles serviced my 990 they are located in Dartmouth. We rode the bike over the bridge to their shop and the owner gave us a lift to the water taxi which took us back to halifax.

The citadel in halifax has a great tour with guides dressed in period clothing.

Old Triangle Pub had good pints!!

We took off for NL after that

Nfld deserves its own trip, IMO.

Your plan to ride around the NS coast and the Trail is a good one.

I'd also ride there and cross into the US at 1000isle near Kingston. Take the back roads and some of the coast in Maine and NB.

On your way back if you've never been to PEI, I recommend taking the Wood Island ferry to PEI and the Confederation Bridge gettting off.

Good luck..

Thanks for the input. I was in PEI for a wedding about 12 years ago. It was pretty, but I'm not sure I need to go back. Maybe if I'm jonesing for a nice beach.

Two weeks? I'd recommend Nova Scotia/Cape Breton, and on the way back loop up to the Gaspé Peninsula.

I do strongly recommend Newfoundland, but as Maggot12 says, it deserves its own trip.

You'd take the Gaspe over the Fundy shore of NB? It sounds appealing, but it would push our mileage a fair bit.

Absolutely. Gaspé is a much more interesting ride. The Fundy shore is pretty dull by comparison.

Two weeks is about right for the Cabot Trail/Lighthouse/Evangeline.
I've done all three on several trips, but not all together since I've only taken a week per trip.
I think you could combine one of the above items with a NFLD jaunt, but it would probably require a rigid schedule and less than relaxing pace.

The most recent adventure was September just passed and it was a hectic pace through Ontario>Quebec, crossed over into Maine past Sherbrooke on 212 and towards Bangor, then back into NB at St. Stephen.
Past Sherbrooke it was a very nice ride, before that not so much.
However, this route ate up a lot of distance in a hurry - we stopped near Bangor the first night.

If I had 2 whole weeks, I'd ride through Adirondacks>Green Mountains>White Mountains>Hwy 1 coastal to NB>Evangeline>Lighthouse Route>Cabot Trail>Gaspé>Mont-Tremblant>Renfrew>Bancroft>Toronto
