Day 16, April 16th – 255 miles, Batopilas, Chihuahua to Yecora, Sonora

The goal this day was to make it out of Copper Canyon and start heading home. Zack needed to be back in Iowa on the 21st and I needed to start heading home. We would split up and each ride as far as each wanted for the day. This was my route:

The road out of Batopilas to Creel is a well reported route. The dirt section just hugs the walls of the canyon for miles and miles. Even the road along the river has its challenges before you start to ascend up the canyon.

Got gas at the famous station in Bato.

Along the way my left hand guard disappeared. It had been busted from its moorings in Crash #1, but had still hung on, but now the bolt was getting loose and finally gave way. Sa la vie. I was not going to stop on the side of the canyon and/or go back and look for it. I was hanging on for dear life.

We made it up to the top and hit the road construction. Photos below. Waited a little while why the guy pushed boulders into the canyon and then headed across. It was loose ground, only trampled down by the bull dozer a little bit. Zack went first and was fine. I crashed.

Crash #6 – Hitting the Wall
As I headed across the rough section the bike was bouncing all over and since I was hugging the wall since there was a drop off on the other side, I bounced into the wall. More scratches for the bike!

After we got on the pavement and stopped a while later, I noticed the spring load on the bike had moved itself completely to the loose position. Not sure how that happened, but might have had something to do with the crash.

We went a few miles and Zack had stopped to activate his GoPro. That was the last I saw of him as I lost him somewhere in Creel. He stopped at a restaurant for lunch but it was off the main drag and although I drove back and forth, I never saw his bike. I figured he wanted to get some miles under his belt…

I did get an email from him later that night and he had made it to Chuaiaih. He said he got here just before dark, checked into a nice place on the edge of town. Quickly figured out something was fishy. Pretty sure it was a place for drug dealers. Left in a hurry and checked into the Best Western…

Copper Canyon Video

Fellow Advers made this video and I think it reflects the nature of the riding in the canyon. I think this is the dirt road down into Batopolis from Creel....Of course I would have been riding on the inside lane next to the canyon wall! Thanks for taking and posting the video MoodyBlues!

Motorcycle Damage Report

Given the 6 “crashes” or “bike naps” during the Copper Canyon portion of the trip, I thought I would summarize the damage to the bike:

- Left Hand Guard (Gone, need replacement)
- Right Hand Guard (scratches, replacement)
- Right Pannier (bracket busted, tab busted, need replacement)
- Left Pannier (scratches)
- Engine Crash guard (dented, pound out)
- Exhaust Header (cross pipe dented, left pipe dented, need replacement)
- Windshield (scratches)
- Cylinder Head Guards (scratches and nicks on both side)
- Cylinder Heads (scratches)
- Front Fender (deep scratch on one side)

Bike does not have crash bars. I was going to get them, but then I would have had to replace the cylinder head guards, etc. and was not sure I was going to the Canyon. Live and learn.

Soos,

Great report. I really wasn't trying to kill you. I guess that's what makes it an adventure, right. I admittedly did get tired of waiting and picking up your bike, but I was really glad I had someone to ride with, so it was a small price to pay. If you wouldn't have come along, we both probably would have missed the Canyon. I hope I'm as able as you are when I'm 55. I'll get some pictures posted soon.
