Between Kevin and Jeff I had my own guided tour of Southern PA and a little bit of Maryland.
The fog was thick at elevation and messed up our vision a bit.

Closed end of the clip needs to be facing the direction of foward rotation. Keep in mind on this pic, the chain is on the opposing side of your KLR.

The last time I replaced my chain the clip was missing also. Every other time I've used a regular link. I have a master link for emergency use only from now on.

No, Dupont multi purpose teflon spray. Why do you ask?
that's the first time EVER i lost one.
I have a spare one on now(saftey wired)

He uses a multi-purpose lube that's good on and off the bike.

Sometimes the chain guide wears the clip paper thin and then it falls off.

Check that first.

Not my bike in the pic.

Whatever silicone you have will work. It's how well it's cleaned/preped that matters.

Good call on the Teflon stuff. The thinner lubes are less likely to attract contaminates but don't last as long. So lube it often. Better for dirtier rides.

The heavier lubes and waxes are better for long cleaner street rides. They last longer.

Remember, it's impossible to overlubricate a chain.

Ding, Ding, there's your answer. And wasn't your guide or guard rubbing?

You said it was making noise.

No it wasn;t that,that was the rubber guide that wraps around the swingarm by the front sprocket, i think Dan means the chain guide that hangs off the swingarm in front of the rear sprocket.Plus my clip wasn't rubbing on anythig when i checked it after breakfast that morning.
