Resurrecting the wife's bike

Last Fall I managed to crash for the first time in at least 20 years on the street. Of course I managed to do it on my wife's R80ST, probably the nicest ride in the garage. You can read about the crash here; http://new.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55249

you can see how badly bent the subframe is

I've been paying penance by landscaping the yard, a major project in itself. Things have finally progressed to the point where MsNorton no longer needs as much help, so I started on the R80ST yesterday.
The lower steering stem cup is flared, so the frame is going to need to be repaired. While it's being fixed, I'll get it checked for straightness.
I started by removing the subframe, bobber anyone

While I've got it off, I might as well see if the R100GS subframe I happen to have will fit

Hmm, very close, only the bottom bolt holes are off by a couple mm, so that should work.
Got a GS tank, seat and rack kicking around too, this could become a interesting little ride

Next, finish stripping the frame and send it off to be repaired.
Gonna need a speedo, headlight assy, and petcocks for the GS tank. Anyone out there got any?

Finished stripping the bike to the bare frame last week. Took a crap load of pics of the wiring harness etc so I don't have to rely on my alcohol addled memory to get it all back together.

The frame appears to be straight, no bending of the gusset plates supporting the steering head, no flaked paint anywhere. The steering stop is sheered off, and the upper stamped steel triple clamp is bent.
Going to take apart the forks and check the tubes for straightness.
Found a place that does the welding for the Honda Leadwing recalls, so I figure they know what they are doing. They have the frame right now to weld the steering stop back on.
Next is replacing spokes in the front wheel.

Another thing to check for frame damage is the straightness of the spine (from head tube back to the battery). I always thought that the gussets would be straight if the frame was undamaged, but that's evidently not the case.

Did you have any problems fitting the R100 gs tank and seat to the R80 frame?

I replaced the subframe with a R100GS subframe. I doubt the seat would work on the original subframe, although the tank should.

Yeah, I laid a straight edge along the top tube, looks OK. If there was someone locally that could laser check it, I would, but the only place I found that says they could do it is in CA, and just shipping the frame to be checked, without any work done would be $100 there and back again.
If I had found any sign of paint flaking or bends, it would be there.
I believe the damage was done as the bike tumbled over the small cliff and the front wheel caught the end of a log on the way down, twisting the forks and breaking the fork stop and bending the upper triple clamp.

I went to Hot Springs. The frame goes to the powder coaters this week. i'm working on lining up a painter. More in a little while.

back on track

Well, between the weather being great for riding, a few long trips, and the powder coater's equipment breaking down, I'm finally getting back to the R80ST. I've gotta get it done, 'cause I've got at least four more project bikes to do, a 1975 Norton Commando for my wife, a 1951 AJS 500cc single that I'm going to build up as a street scrambler, a 1967 Bultaco M49 trials bike, and the one I'm most exited about, a 1961 Matchless G3C, a 350cc trials bike.
Getting back to the task at hand however, I started to get all the parts out of the attic and start reassembly. As indicated earlier, I have a R100GS subframe that I want to use. Almost immediatly, I ran into the first problem;




As you can see, the leading edge of the rear fender is going to be rubbing the tire when the suspension depresses. I'd kinda thought that might be a problem, so hadn't sent the bodywork out to be painted yet.
Options are to use a heat gun and try to bend the fender forward, redrill the holes and try to relocate the fender, or just replace it with a Acerbis rear fender.

been waiting for this to come back.

I have a stupid question. Do you regrease the bearings after toasting? they're not packed beforehand?
