Wrenching with Joel Wisman - DIY Videos

Joel says, "Just fix it....you can do it. All you need is a basic understanding and a few simple tools, and you can self-diagnose & solve nearly every problem on your F800GS!"

Sounds great, Joel, but slow down....I can't take notes fast enough. And I'm still trying to dig up all your incredible posts in this Parallel Universe. Dang it....I should have started a special binder for it 2 years ago. Wish you could just send me a video of the procedure.

Wait a minute....your a professional BMW mechanic (maybe the best one ever), and I'm a video specialist.

Let's put our heads together and collaborate on a project:

The Joel Wisman Chronicles, Vol I - Debugging the bugs from your F800GS

That's kind of how it all began. And we've been outlining procedures and planning the video shoot ever since. And, we are really close to actually doing this. But then, I started wondering.....would anybody besides us think this a worthy project? Would anyone actually want a DVD like this? So, we'd like to get some feedback from the collective to gauge the interest. The project would be a serious effort on both our parts.

For those that might not know Joel, he's the real deal. His qualifications on the subject matter are world renown. What we are talking about here is a step by step video guide into diagnosing and fixing some of the more serious problems you might encounter. Some normal things and some abnormal things. All of which could leave you stranded. But with a little knowledge and a few simple tools, you could make a fix and journey onward.

Potential topics include:

1) Troubleshooting Diagnosis & Problem Solving
Electrical system - ZFE bug, faulty charging, dead battery
Fuel Injection system - weak or clogged injector, stuck fuel pump
2) Stator Replacement
3) Voltage Regulator check
3) Camchain oscillation & tensioner issues
4) Shift Selector - bent internal shaft fix
5) Clutch cable measurement & free play - don't ruin your clutch
6) Stuck cooling fan
7) Valve gasket leak
8) HLM bearing spec check

Stuff like that. Maybe Joel can explain it better. I love my F800GS....love it...love it. And would definitely like to learn more about it, make it even better, and feel more self-sufficient. However, I'd have to donate my bike and hold my breath while he tears it apart.......for the Collective Cause, of course.

If there's enough interest, we might even throw in a Valve Inspection & Adjustment procedure as a bonus.

What say you? Anybody interested such a DVD?

HF

Either would be sweet to me. I just watched some vids about the forks and it was a huge help when changing the springs.

I like the idea of video itself.. but I'm not sure about the distribution channel -- I mean whether the DVD is practical enough.

Many newer ntbks do not have a CD/DVD drive... especially the smaller ones -- those you'd take to the garage.

So something like a porn distribution -- pay as you download (an WMV, AVI, MOV whatever) .. or simply a Youtube videos?

Or short youtube videos + longer variant -- download for few bucks?

---

and.. youtube works on iPad...

F658gs?

Whereas the F650GS is essentially the same machine, count me in. Being "old school" I like being able to have "paper" laid out on the bench while I'm working on stuff. Easier to scribble notes in the margins.
But, I could print out the pages that I wanted from whatever media was supplied so, yeah, count me in.

I'm in!

I have a feeling that you have most of the "angles" figured out, but here's a suggestion: a paid membership site that gives access to the hard work that Joel and you do and will continue to do.

I'd throw some cash at the cause

Laugh

This is a great idea, HF!

Some other topics in no particular order: chain adjust, chain & sprocket replacement, head bearing lube & adjust, swing arm bearing lube & adjust, Joel's radiator bleed procedure, valve inspection & adjust, brake pads & bleeding, accessory mounting, shock replacement. It's endless.

You'd do real well with this. Look at Jim Von Baden's success with his R1200 DVD series. DVD preferred. Go for it!
