1150gsa squeak

Am I the only one who has a squeak for a minute or so on my GSA until it gets warmed up? No problem with performance but I wonder if it is a precursor to a break down at the wrong time.

It is definitely coming from the front part of the engine. I took the alternator belt off and spun the pulley but I don't hear a squeak. I also turned the crank shaft with a wrench but didn't hear anything there either.

Any insights or help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Change the belt.
Mine failed and shreaded at 36K.
Put on a new one at 72K and saved the old as a spare to carry in my repair kit.

If this is on the 04 GS check the build date as there is a different belt before 5/04.

That was my first thought. But the belt looks good on close inspection and is only 20k miles old.

That being said, since it is off I guess it is worth replacing. We'll see.

Any other ideas from anyone?

I hear the same sqeak in front coming from the alternatorbelt, only when I start the bike. New belt is already in the garage, but I didn't find the time yet to replace it. If the noice is not away with replacing the belt, you'll find a new post here.
My belt has 60 K km.

Mine does the same thing. It's more noticeable on cold damp mornings. I suspect the belt is just a little under tensioned. It goes away within the first half mle of riding. It's on my list of things to replace at the next major service. Be careful to not to get the tension too tight, it will turn into a birdsnest.

My 2000 1150 does the same thing. The belt is in good shape, and the tension appears right. Goes away shortly after warming up, so I don't worry about it.

Sometimes the mouse on the treadmill inside the engine is asleep when the engine starts and gets a fright when suddenly woken up, hence the" squeak". I have found that if I meow loudly before pressing the starter the problem goes away!

Talking

My 1150 did the same thing when it hadn't been run in a while. Traded it in on a 1200ADV and the problem went away.

If the belt chirps a couple of times on cold start but never after warmup then you've got it tensioned perfectly.

Looser than that it will slip, tighter and there is undue stress on the belt and alt bearings.

Kind of reviving an old thread but I have a similar problem on my '00 1150GS, but it doesn't go away after the bike is warm. I just had the belt changed about 4k miles ago for regular maintenance, so my first thought was that the belt got broken in and need retightening. I tightened the belt, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. I do have a small oil leak, but it's seems like it's coming from behind the alternator - a long ways away from the belt. Maybe some oil did get on the belt and is causing a squeak? Is it possible to wash the belt and pulleys as a test, or does it get "burnt in" and require a replacement?

I'm pretty sure your belt is one notch off the groove. Recheck and make sure it is all the way on the lower pulley.

Fixed my belt squeak the other day. I took the cover off and it was filthy with oil inside. I know I've got an oil leak, but I didn't know it was getting up in the alternator belt area. I hosed everything off with Brakleen and everything works great now. ....Except that oil leak....
