New Here - First Bike
Just thought I would introduce myself, I just purchased my first bike. It is a 1979 Yamaha DT175F. I know absolutely nothing about motorcycles, and have never ridden. The lights were stripped off of it and it has not been registered in who knows how long. I plan to put lights back on it, and hopefully register it. It was probably not my best move, but it runs and I was able to gt it for $185. I am pretty active on Expo forum, and it was recommend that I read through here and see what I can learn.
I will pick up the bike in a couple of days, so now I just need to learn how to ride, get a license, put lights on it, and try to get it registered. Here are some not so great photos ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately I cant get the scooter :) |

Welcome and good luck, it is a bit of aa task you have set yourself there learning to ride and fix your bike at the same time. If you are interested in what you can do with that type of bike somewhere here is the story of a chap riding a 1972 Suzuki TS185 from the US to Central America.

I am hoping that it will be an "easy" bike to learn with. I know it is not the same, but I spent years as a BMX racer growing up, so hopefully some of that will transfer over. The bike runs well, I just have to find the parts to hopefully get it back street legal. At this point I am not looking to really ride on the street much, just cruise some fire roads, and maybe run into town from camp for a quick meal. That will probably all change once I learn a bit and get more comfortable on a bike.
Anyone have a resource for me to see exactly what I need to register it? I assume it is Lights (headlight, brake light, turn signals) Horn, and mirrors. Now that I have committed to this bike, I am seeing something about an emissions sticker, does that apply to a bike this old? Where would it be? I am planning on swinging by the Yamaha dealer near my house on Monday to see just what I have gotten myself into

Take a MSF rider course, buy high quality safety gear, start off slow while learning and have a blast. I've been riding for 42 years and it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

As for the safety class, I volunteer with the San Bernardino National Forest OHV so I can get some free classes through them. Figured I would start there (once I either get it street legal or green sticker) and then see what other courses are available outside of that program |

sunset ridge area is a nice little drive, and is not even 10min from home.
As for the bike, I went to AAA today, they show it as Non-op since 1998. They did not have the form I need and I could not get to DMV before they closed. I am assuming that since it has had the Non-op that it will have to have a safety inspection before I can register it. Is this correct? |

Well, I went to DMV today, no questions asked, bike is registered.
Now I just need to find some lights, and learn how to ride.
