Happy B Day - loooong time on the road :)

Since you are reminiscing... Had a question about
the alum tool tray you fabbed way back when at
RR HQ:

http://advrider.com/forums/showpost....&postcount=650

Are you still using it - and the Unifilter ? If so,
how is it holding up - looked like you had some
good heft wrapped up in your tool kit...

I assume there was some loss of intake height
over the stock location - though seems not to
have bothered you...

ALSO - who did you use to ship the bike out of
Japan - will be on a similar RTW ride next year
and wondering about flying bike out of Japan

Thanks !

Nope, I switched it out in Switzerland. I'm glad I did too. I was able to map leaner with the stock air box. When I had the Uni filter I was using 10 to 15% more fuel. That adds up when you are riding long distances

I am using K-line Ro-Ro to ship out of Japan. It will take about 2 weeks to get to Thailand. Cost will be less then $1000 all said and done I think. More details later.

Noah, thanks for an awesome RR. The fact that you take the time to answer people's questions has made this so much more than an RR, it's become a real source of knowledge, particularly for the 690. Like many people here, after never considering one, it's becoming a serious contender for the next bike...damn you!

Ride safe.

Really nice trip Noah ... looks like you're really dialed with that 690 and as exited about it as I am about my 990's. My friend is getting a 690 tomorrow it'll be nice to give it a try
Thanks for sharing and have fun.

Sorry for the slight hijack Noah, but if I may, I'd like to testify.

I lowsided my 690 yesterday on a corner, in the rain, doing ~50mph, wearing the Klim Rally jacket (with Acerbis Koerta armor underneath), and Dakar pants.

I slid for quite a ways, as did the bike, but got up and rode home.

I wore a small hole in the forearm of the jacket where the armor would align with. I created enough friction heat on my backside to actually feel like I was getting burned, but can find very little evidence of wear in that area of the pants.

Buy Klim's gear without reservation. It's expensive, but very well engineered, well made, and worth every penny.

Just my .02

I found out this morning a 21 year old Aussie named Rohan Felmingham had his bike stolen in Dublin a few days ago. He rode from Japan to Ireland this summer. All of his gear was on the bike when it was stolen. So I'd like to show this kid the same love so many people showed me. Lets make this right for him so he can continue his trip!

EDIT: Send donations strait to Rohan. Rohan_fel@hotmail.com

EDIT #2: I just sent 100 Euro. Who's going to match me?

"I am a 21 year old Australian who purchased the Yamaha earlier this year for my trip around the world. I ferried the bike to Russia 5 months ago, and have since done 30,000 kms through 15 different countries. I arrived in Ireland on Tuesday at 1pm, and it was taken within less than 8 hours of my arrival.

BIKE MAKE: Yamaha

BIKE MODEL: Xt660z Tenere

YEAR: 2011

COLOUR: white (w/ thin red and black strip on sides of tank)

ODO: 42,000kms

EXTRAS (mod's aftermarket parts etc.): sw motech aluminium panniers (with large 'OK Logic' sticker on side), Touratech Hand Guards, Center Stand, Tank bag rack, Gopro Mounts

LAST SEEN: The corner of Aston Quay and the O'Connell Bridge, Dublin, between 5pm and 9pm on Tuesday.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES (scratches/dents etc.): Japanese Number Plate
Incredibly bent clutch and brake levers,
Scratched windshield with White Numbers painted on it.
Quite dented panniers"

That sucks - as an Irish American I can say this, Filthy Shanty Irish. I guess when the Celtic Tiger left the thieves walked in. I'm in for some loot.

I cross posted the Tenere theft on a couple of forums yesterday, lets hope they find it.

I find it absolutely disgusting that these scum can steal not only somebodies bike but their home and possessions as well. And in Dublin again?

One thing is for sure, when I leave I am definitely investing in the best of every kind of GPS tracking, marking and anti-theft systems on the market. This stuff angers me so much
