Ahh man...this brings back memories! Crazy ass no rules traffic....Delhi was about the same only add about as many cars as there were scooters....but also keep the scooters....really quite mental to westerners. But as you know....you quickly get used to it. Toward the end of my time there I almost started to enjoyed the madness....its quite liberating sometimes when you can just do whatever you want to....

I'm visiting my parents in a retirement community. Like that but with golf carts.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Tommy, this made me laugh. Doesn't help that I almost spit my "dark and stormy" out my nose.

Loved the new video and glad to see the man beard back after that shaving incident.

Enjoying the RR, thanks for taking the time. It is without a doubt a huge effort. Seeing you enjoying yourself on those crappy scooters reminds me that sometimes we overthink things. Small simple bikes can be a blast if approached in the right context and with the right expectations.

I agree. Back when I used to frequent the gulf Islands in Thailand, I used to rent scooters and rip around exploring the islands. I would see other travelers/tourists renting the bigger dirt bikes...we got smoked going up the mountain on Koh Phangan by a couple of French guys on 450's!! Although the suspension would have been nice on the jungle roads, they were waay too big....and these guys would tear around in nothing but surf shorts and flipflops on full on dirt bikes....Had plenty of fun on the scoots

Haha.. I had fun on the scooter but I would have much rather been at least on a xr250 or something with suspension and power to climb the hills. Its nice to have power to pass but in traffic, if you go faster then a scooter you will probably die because people will still cut you off thinking you are slow like a scooter.

Uhhhhm, one important thing comes into play here . . . . . .

Lived thru one minority party revolt while I lived in Bangkok(early '90s) . . . . . .
Gun fire in the streets, people were shot, etc. . . . . .

At that time, the king was able to step in, mediate the situation, and bring everyone to their senses . . . . . . . .
Everyone has the utmost respect for the king . . . . .

Only difference now is nobody is sure that the elderly & feeble king would be able to step in and bring everyone back to their senses as he's done in the past . . . . .

Oh, and his successor, well nobody will kow-tow to that eight-ball . . . . .

Just caught up with reading the latest installments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Keep up the great travels.

Yeah a xr250 would have been perfect. I've not ben to 'Nam yet, but from what I've seen and from what friends who've been tell me, the tracks that go up and over Koh Phangan (at least back in 2006) are similar...there were these real narly ruts going every which way across the roads created by washout from the jungle during heavy rains....hit them the wrong way and you were done!

Noah,
Loved watching the video. It's got to be liberating and terrifying at the same time to be able to just drop some cash on a bike/scooter and ride the piss out of it and walk away at the end. They even sound great on the video... better than most 250's with FMF cans.

I also must comment on the "accent". I can't believe after all your travels you're still carrying Minnesota with you. I guess the saying is true. "You can take the boy out of Minnesota, but not Minnesota out of the boy". I grew up in the Detroit Lakes area and listening to you brings back those days!

Keep the great report coming... I wake up with this report (and others) with my coffee every morning.
Cheers,
Jon

Here's what we were riding through in Thailand...this was a little hut in the jungle where an old couple lived. They sold drinks and chips to passers by...the old guy even serenaded us with this crazy two string instrument:

WAY too much fun

Noah, the scooter adventures are keeping me in stitches. The video is absolutely amazing and I really appreciate the constant photo examples of bad driving. Keep up the good work!
