Anyway, back on topic...Noah, great trip report. I've read it start to finish over the last few days (not at work!), and it's been a great read all the way through. Just one quick question if you have the time: I'm curious as to how you plan where you're going to sleep for the night. Are you basically rolling into towns and sorting it out on the fly, or is it more organized? And as for camping, are you stealth-camping or is that planned as well?
Planning stuff sucks. I just want to ride. On my GPS I have a count down to sunset. I usually try to stop riding about 1 1/2 hours before sunset to set up camp or find a hotel. If you pay in advance, then you HAVE to make it there and sometimes you run into problems then end up riding at night. The only time I plan ahead is when I am going into big cities, then I make sure I find a place with secure parking. Especially If I'll be there for a while.

As far as the 450 goes, I would pay that price for a small adventure bike. I had more money into my previous 690 when it was all farkled and ready to go. And it weighs less then my 690... Would need more then 17l of fuel though. It has peaked my interest since I first heard about it at RallyRaid UK this past summer.

and don't skip Nippon like someone suggested, it's an awesome country, even more awesome probably if you have a bike to travel around (I had to stick with trains)

What oils have you been able to source for the 690 along the way? Have you been finding the 10W60, or just using what's available?

I have not had so much problem finding 10w60. I usually try to find a KTM dealer and they let me work on the bike. So far it has been Motul and Motorex. If I know I'm coming up on an oil change I will buy a few liters and carry it. Agip, Liqui Moly and a few other brands make high quality 10w60 synthetic for motos.

Nice!

I wish it was easier to find the magical 10W60 here in the states. In Denver the KTM dealer does not even stock the stuff.

Anywhere you go I'm sure there are people that don't like Americans. I'm sure Noah will change their opinion quick enough. :)
