Anyways, here's the photo:

So does that plastic thing with the bar snap in from the top of the opening? I wonder if it was something they were supposed to install during the PDI and never did.

Yes. It was designed so that it can be removed.

It snaps in from the top. No idea whether it was supposed to be installed by the dealer on some bikes or whether it came from factory, but my guess is that it comes like this from the factory today, but there might have been a transition period (maybe, but I doubt it).

Well I don't have it and never saw it. Maybe I am a lucky one because it appears it could be a PITA.

Thanks for the pics and feedback.

Hmmm, mine looked like neither of those. I had a single metal bar that was obviously welded onto the tank. You can see where the welds broke. And, no I never did shove the nozzle into the tank. I was and am very careful because I've read report on other boards of them breaking and falling into the tank.

I wouldn't say PITA but certainly they are a bit in the way. I got used to it and barely notice it anymore when filling.

My guess is the dealer pushed it into the tank when putting fuel in it. I pulled mine out, it's easy. You would really have to shove that nozzle in there to hit anything.

Sorry no photo just now, but my 2012 has two silver bars. The only problem they cause is you cant get the nozzel very far in and the gas sometimes splashes back out if you squeeze the handle too hard.

Sounds like you have an early 2012 model.

Looks like there are a few different types of the bar. Here is a photo of mine:

Metal bars, metal nozzle. Wouldn't want to have spark there..
