I'm all in now, !

The trumpets are ground down to accept the 2.5" K&Ns for now. I ordered another pair of 2.5 X 5" foam Uni pods.

I tried them both with and without the outer foam filters I rigged up, no difference. Without the covers it is very lean on the main, with it (richer) is better. Almost "good enough". I bet adding fatter mains will mess up the perfect low to mid, she pulls hard till the main at WFO, then tapers off a little.

I'm scanning thru my brass collection as I type. Anyone know off hand if the mains are the same as a FCR???

*** EDIT, not even close by the pics I found. I've got a load of those!

Thanks!

the K&N's are #RU-2780

Is that correct now? Aren't the CV mains in the second section with a screwdriver slot in the heads?

The K&N filters are #RU-2780 it's on the K&N filter boxes that came with my 39mm FCR kit from Ken (Head2Wind).

Ken's kit is designed to work within the boundary set with the airbox and a constricting prefilter. I would guess that its dangerously lean running tiny mains and bigger air jets with those free flowing k&ns. In fact back in the day, I ran some similar filters I had laying around with 180/185 mains and it would take more! Lots of power but I never could figure out how to get it leaned out enough on the low end to make it worthwhile and also had issues keeping the filters in place.

Its a sickness! These cv carbs

Based upon my recent work with similar filter system (difference being that the CPR is a open element with very little restriction and no plate effect above the velocity stack), the main jets that I usually suggest for a PF OEM airbox are WAY TOO LEAN.

The bottom end will be close, tip in will be close (slightly lean), mid will start to get lean, top will be excessively lean.

What happened to your FCRs?

Second bike Ken!

I ended up with 160 mains front and rear and can't find a fault with the bare K&Ns at this point. I'll be swapping to the Uni foams and will double check everything again after.

No water crossings with this bike but my other has FCRs and pods, the stock airbox has holes in it so the top of the carb is really the limit anyway as far as I'm concerned.

Without a wideband I am just doing what I do to test my enduros and MXers, hold steady throttle trying to feel the transitions from each step/jet/needle/jet and work my way up to the top in micro increments. It is smooth and jerk/snatch free to the RPM limiter as it sits now. WOT from near idle to the top plain rips, with my 17s and 16/44 gears it is hard to shift before the limiter in the lower 2 gears.

Midrange seems to have been boosted on top of it. Rideability is super and smooth.

My only concern is the air horns popping out unexpectedly. I have one locked with safety wire to the end of the clamp. I'll be eyeballing that again when the Unis show up.

So, H2W prefilter settings for everything but the mains, mix screws 1.5 out and its feeling really good.

Ken, if you have any advice to make it better I'm listening!

PS Ken, my FCRs are a PITA at race pace. At 75% they are fine, when I go 100% I'm getting stalling mid corner. The CV stalling during rough stutters/whoops is gone but this new problem has raised its head. Sucks to dive under a 450 and have the bike stall! My son tested it too, same thing so its not just my fat brake foot!

What's the p/n on the Uni's and where are you getting them from (Mr. Mail Order here...I have no local anything!)?
Are they superior to the K&N's?

I gotta try this...I hate that damn airbox!

I got them from Rocky Mountain ATV mail order. I prefer the foam to K&Ns style filters, they are supposed to keep flowing where the K&N will clog, on the street it shouldn't be an issue but I keep a bucket of bio oil for the dirtbikes and with a set on my SE, why not have the same parts on everything?

I'll try some fatter mains down the road just to see what effect they have. Without the airbox I had my tank off and the carbs flipped over to change the mains in under ten minutes.
