Death Valley: Long Solo Weekend

I left from Palo Alto before the President's Day Weekend to avoid the get-outta-town rush. This way, instead of a big push to get out to the Dez, I could take the leisurely route down Highway 1.

I often stop at this inlet down around Big Sur and marvel at the color and scenery. I still don't think I've done a good job of capturing just how spectacular this is....

I like to overnight in Morro Bay. Since this was a lazy trip and I wasn't hauling camping gear, I stayed at one of the nice hotels overlooking the harbor. Bonus this time of year is, no fog! Great sunsets and sunrises.

I usually get chowder in a sourdough bowl at Giovanni's. Awesome stuff. Plus, then I can wander around the wharf and take in the sights, sounds, and smells. And take a bunch of photos too.

One of the great things about Morro Bay is that it's a working harbor...and you can walk along the entire length of the harbor and watch the boats, seals, birds, and get great views of the spit and Morro Rock.

I like this little pier and the shape of these lights. I tried to get the star effect you see with small apertures. My little point and shoot camera only goes to f/11, but I think this came out pretty well.

Here's another shot from that little pier. This one doesn't have the small aperture or rays-on-light effect.

Which one is better? Or is there a "better?"

There's lots of abandoned stuff between the coast and the desert.

This lodge is on 166. Looks like it was a big resort once-upon-a-time. No longer.

For some reason, this old fruit stand had lost their huge sign-on-a-pole. It was just sitting there on the ground.

Great colors though!

I like the old style, one-word, command signs: Eat! Sleep! Ripe! Sex!

OK, you don't see that last one, but you know what I mean....

That Big Sur inlet looks like a gigantic yin yang symbol, very cool.

I usually stop in Ridgecrest then go up past Trona, Panamint Valley, Wildrose Canyon, etc.

This time, I went up to Lone Pine instead.

Here's a nice Mt. Whitney shot--the highest point in the lower 48:

It's interesting that the lowest point in the lower 48 is just a few miles away over in Death Valley at Badwater.

Anyway, I always like the way the Sierras just suddenly reach for the sky over on the Eastern side. None of that gradual stuff, just Blammo! there they are!

I took the previous shot from the Alabama Hills. I had some time to meander around in there...I really like that area.

And if you've seen any old westerns from the 30s or 40s (or even later), you'll feel a kinda deja vu in there.

I really like the rocks in there. I'm surprised there aren't a lot of pix of Trials guys balancing on stuff....

I think this was Saline Valley Road. I didn't want to have to slow down, so I turned around and left before I got to all of the Wild Life at the hot springs....

Thank goodness for National Park Service signage. I never would have known otherwise....

I stopped in and checked out the real Stovepipe Well.
(Not that place with the store, gas station, and hotel)

This old igneous formation is down by Badwater. I think there used to be a sign there long ago, but now the NPS has placed those boulders you see down there on Badwater Road.

I think they are hoping people ignore this thing...and maybe vandals will leave it alone?

Nice shape out there in the middle of DV though....

Mustard Canyon.

I always get a hankering for a hot dog when I ride through here....
