diesel, your injuries are significantly more severe than mine.....all I can say is you must have a great doctor to fix you back up. My first dr was a quack....second dr did a hell of a job, I wanted my leg cut off, he saved it though.

Diesel1959, I am relatively new to AdvRider, but have served like you. I have had similar injuries (military time not my police career) and I thank you for your service and ongoing sacrifices! Stay strong!

Back to the hospital

Well, I'm back in the hospital--came in yesterday. I'll be here for about two weeks or so, for three procedures. Yesterday morning, I had the first surgery. They went in and cleaned out a lot of fluids and gunk, de-burred a sharp bone shard, and then took a big sample from deep into the femur. Then they roto-rootered the femur to clean out what appears to be pus/gunk/yadda yadda, leading them to suspect osteomyelitis. Also, they removed the two big screws that were in the femur between the break and the knee. After they cleaned the bone up, they inserted a rod filled with antibiotic beads, and then closed up.

I'm in very little pain, weak as a kitten, and being attended to by hot-as-balls nurses and techs. So I got that going for me.

Diesel,

Best of luck. I'm pulling for you.

Just a little hospital humor to lighten your time in the wards.

My first night after my surgery, I really had to pee. All the cute nurses had gone home and the two burly male nurses were on for the night. I asked one of them for an in and out cath to drain my bladder. Dude looks at me and says, "Just keep trying, you'll end up going."

So I'm trying to go in the urinal and all I get is a dribble. And at that point, I'm in agony.

So I call the nurse over again and BEG for him to put a tube in my penis to drain my bladder. Again he tries to persuade me to use the urinal.

I look at him and say, "Look - I'm a dude. Asking a dude to shove a plastic tube into something only my wife and I touch. PLEASE PUT THE CATHETER IN".

He agrees and proceeds to drain 1100ccs and then has the nerve to say, "Wow. You must have been in pain. You should have asked earlier".

Be glad you have hot nurses and techs.

Best wishes Diesel.
The nurse thing doesn't exist without photos! And, it never hurts to ask for one unless they're going to catheterize you with a hose.

Yowza! Last night and today I had a horrible urge to pee but couldn't get it done. Finally, after some twelve hours, I was able to squeeze out 800ccs bit by bit. Oh what a relief.

Just found this thread and read it through. I'm glad that the original BS that the mods trimmed out has simmered down and it's a more positive place.

I wish you the best and hope that your surgeries and recoveries go well.

This was earlier today, when the surgeons came to change the surgical dressing:

That is hardcore. It looks like a long road, but I hope you get the best possible outcome.

Diesel,

Great to read your updates.

Stay strong, your journey is just amazing.

Are you still employed or do they release injured officers?

I'm off the payroll, but they hung on to me for fifteen months. They're still carrying my commission, but I'll be back if at all physically possible. Workers Comp is taking good care of me now and, of course, all my medical needs. I'm very fortunate.

Have you found yourself needing anything? I know in my hard times some forums have put together some amazing things for me that really helped. I'm sure we could figure something out to help you along.

Diesel,

You Sir, are my absolute hero! My worst accident was a broken femur but can not for the life of me imagine what you have endured! You have a whole following pulling for you and always remember...."Chick dig scars!"

Keep staying positive, you truly are an inspiration.

Shannon
