Essentially it's a direct swap for the OEM unit and you control it via Bluetooth and iPhone/Android apps. See the Kickstarter for more details.

This does sound interesting but i have a couple of questions

Does it need the bike to have a battery or will it be ok with a standard wiring set up on the R?

Other than the principal that the ignition map triggers the spark at the right time depending on the engine speed, I know very little about them. How do we get hold of alternative maps etc.

Once the unit is installed and set up are there any inherent weakness with the hardware or software? For example, can it crash like an old windows PC and leave you stranded.

Standard wiring is fine.

The app will come pre-loaded with the default curve. You can tweak it and save the new version as a "favorite" and upload it to the CDI whenever you want.

The CDI will remember the last timing curve you uploaded so your phone crashing doesn't stop the bike at all.

The CDI includes a smart Bluetooth module with an embedded microcontroller for storing your last ignition curve. I'm using the best module on the market, it's extremely reliable. The manufacturer I'm using is great, these things are built like a rock.

How about adding the possibility of a USB port with a weatherproof cover? this would offer an alternative to the bluetooth for connectivity. There are still many out there still using brick phones.

Cisco, I'm a sucker for electrical toys. especially something that brings 30 year technology into the current world. I did the same with my 1991 OBD1 suburban with bluetooth and a tablet.

If you are looking for beta testers or a (guinea pig) I'd be willing to offer up my bike to the Honda gods!

USB would mean having to write Windows and Mac OS X software. So it isn't happening any time soon. The alternative for non-smartphone users is to pick up a cheap Android tablet for ~$40.

Flash-based storage for the last used timing curve.

You're not the first person to mention USB. I just added it to the Kickstarter's FAQ.

Interesting -I'm building several modified GB500s.
Would this work on those?

Thanks

Xr650r cdi

Cisco
Sounds like a great idea
One of our better known XR650R builders has used other aftermarket programmable CDI units that enable significant additional ignition curve advance over stock (43 degrees at Max advance I believe) this has required relocation of the trigger leading edge on the flywheel.
Will your system provide similar range without a need to modify trigger position on the flywheel?
Also will you ship to Australia?
Many thanks,

No GB500 support in this campaign. Maybe next time.

For that advancement this CDI would also require a modified trigger position.

Worldwide shipping for $30 USD. Free US shipping.

Thanks Cisco, can you give some idea what max advance the unit will support without relocation of the trigger sensor?

Many thanks,
