How do I use the steering lock (Yes I feel like an idiot)

I have a 1992 R100GS and I can't figure out how to lock the bars. I know where the lock is but turning the bars to either side I can't get it to lock. Is there a trick to this? Am I just an idiot?

Turn the bars to the right. Push in on the key (to engage the lock into the hole in the steering stem, & then turn it to lock it. You may need to move the bart slightly to get engagement.

BTW, DON'T ever leave the keys in the lock. If you turn the bars back you'll snap the key off in the lock.

Supposedly this is the reason for the folding keys!

Ok....am I an idiot to wonder why they lock to the right??? I mean, it makes way more sense to have it locked to the left. Why did they do this???

I suggest a hacksaw to cut the thing off. This makes more room for cables through that area.

Biggest problem with most Airhead steering locks is that there's a key broken off in the cylinder.

I read in some motorcycle travel book that a condom inserted into the lock and filled with hand cream will unlock the steering.

Myth-busters?
