It looks like we are up to 14/32 for over 20,000 miles. According to my math that is about a 44% failure rate.

I have just posted a poll over on F800Riders forum for the F800S / F800ST riders to use:
http://f800riders.org/forum/showthre...ns-please-vote! As best I can tell, those bikes share the same original stator & flywheel design, so we'll see if we learn anything from their experiences ... since that design point has been around since 2006 (I think?) |

My 2009 F650 GS has about 9500 miles on it. No stator problems at this point. I plan to put some miles on this bike this summer. I hope they are trouble free miles.

If I had to guess, starting with a base of 10K miles you will be fine for the summer.
The numbers here are still evolving, but likely you are not at much risk until at least 30K+ miles. I would recommend you add some kind of voltage monitor since we have none. Based on reports from people that have "got the T-shirt" you have ~1 hour of riding time once the stator blows, assuming you don't stop & restart the bike or use heated gear. Unscrewing the low beam headlight is a help. There are a number of monitors out there to choose from, here's the one I put on: http://f800riders.org/forum/showthre...mp-GPS-adapter |

![]() Far better than mine! Alas, at least on my bike, (IIRC) the turn-off the headlight trick only works when you are stationary, and it automatically comes back on when you move a short distance. A friend suggested turning off ABS to save a bit more battery capacity, and I'm sure it would give a bit more range. |

I would be really interested in knowing how many of the "failures" are from people who have over taxed the system. The stock system puts out 400 something watts. Electric vest, PIAAS, GPS, radar detector, hand warmers and your near that point. Put on your turn signal and, honk the horn, and PSAPP. You have cooked it. Dave
