KHuddy likes my DR so much he even provided a very special parking spot for it up at the dorms in Fairbanks. Did he provide special Geezer parking spots for Jack and his bikes? NO. I think that shows how special my DR and I are.
When did Jack get handicap licence plates for his bikes?

Actually, garage parking was provided both in Alaska and Montana and it came with baked goods and Fudge.
Beamertwin you now qualify for special assistance as well, especially if your bike is leaking more oil than the Exxon Valdez. We provided garage privileges just to pacify the EPA!

This has been an interesting thread to read. This summer marks the 20th anniversary of my ride from Virginia to the Arctic Circle on an '82 BMW R100RS, hardly an "adventure" bike as is commonly thought today. But I had a great adventure on my trip. Five weeks on the road, passing a black bear plodding along on the northbound side while I was heading south on the Haul Road from the Circle, seeing Denali without cloud cover, what an amazing state!
I'm thinking of riding back up this summer on my GS, and I found AlcanRider's post so refreshing. I sell BMWs for a living so, if someone wants to buy an Adventure to make that trip, which a number of our customers do, I'm happy to help them. But I'll also tell them they don't need the latest "adventure" machine to go on a trip. I'm very active with Horizons Unlimited (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com), and I know people ride all over and around the world on everything from scooters to sportbikes. The trip and what you bring to it is what matters, not the vehicle.

Don't forget a headlamp!
Headlamps can be a critical piece of equipment to have when you’re traipsing through the woods at night in the dark, which I know summer visitors to Alaska generally don’t have to worry about. A tiny headlamp can highlight big things you want to avoid, including irritated moosies and bears.
Last night while she was out hiking in the dark woods, without a headlamp or pepper spray or cell phone (but still feeling quite comfortable with that situation), somebody (whose name I won’t mention to protect her well-established dignity) had a frightening “Murphy’s Law” moment. After hiking for an hour she needed to relieve herself. Therefore she spent time carefully selecting a tree not too far off the trail that looked like the perfect ladies room, providing privacy from folks who may wander by on the trail. This tree was fairly easy to get too and very dark underneath as the snow had melted all around the base of the tree and some of the surrounding bushes. This lady went under the dark tree and got ready to water the vegetation when she heard some very heavy breathing and snuffling right over her left shoulder. At first she thought (hoped) it was her imagination but the heavy breathing/snuffling continued, sounding kind of perturbed and closer. It was the same type of breathing sound that bears make, but she’s pretty sure it was just a big moose. Oh horrors! The lady screamed, jumped up and bushwhacked through some alders towards the trail, frantically pulling up her pants while trying to jog away from the heavy-breathing, upset creature. She turned and looked behind her several times, but of course couldn’t see anything in the dark. She jogged most of the way back to her car, continually looking behind her as she had recently been chased by a moose. It was just dumb luck that out of all the trees along the trail, this person had the goofy misfortune to choose a tree harboring a big animal that had probably bedded down for the night and didn’t want to be disturbed. I’m quite certain something similar has happened to countless other people. Right? Come visit Alaska and experience all sorts of adventures! Just don’t forget to pack a headlamp in your saddlebag. ![]()

Rather than take this thread farther afield than it has already strayed, a new one will be started, aptly entitled “Mindless Drivel”. This should serve to make nuttynu and HayDuchessLives feel right at home should they deign to post in it.

Of course there was heavy breathing. You had your britches down. LOL. You weren't anywhere near Glennallen were you? Some old geezers will go to great lengths just for a peek.
But seriously, that sounds like a pretty close encounter. Probably a moose, 'cause all the bears ought to be hibernating. BUT they ( the bears) will often burrow in the root structure of a tree. Close call. Glad you are OK. DICK

waders
My son and I wore neoprene chest waders when we crossed Jim Creek on our KLR's. Haven't ever worn them on the road though.
Gary don't know how to add a video, but here's a link: Jim Creek Crossing
