A Sexagenarian at The Goathead 1000

So what happens when an old geezer decides to join the kids to play in the dirt?

First, a little background. A few weeks ago somebody (Sunset_Ryder) decided that it was time to get the horny single riders from the southwest together for some beer and dust. Being the intelligent lady that she is, she also decided to have the event at somebody elses house! Why clean up after a group of ADV'ers when you can dump it on a friend?

A date and time were chosen and the die hards started loading bikes and buying beer. Before you could lube a chain, SirWrecksALot had the equivalent of a Mongol horde heading to Socorro.

Your intrepid traveler will attempt to convey the mature viewpoint, but remember, senility prevents remembering everything.

THEREFORE - WE MUST SHAME THE REST OF THE PICTURE TAKERS AND ATTENDEES INTO GIVING THEIR STORIES!!!
----------------------
Part 1.

Before any trip of a day or so, the first thing to do is get the bike packed. So I head out to the storage trailer and roll out the RT.

Hmmmm........ might need to at least put a seat and wheel on it before I hang the bags on it.

Getting on the Road

After a couple of minutes (OK, hours), a little blue Loctite, a busted knuckle or two and some serious sweating in the 100F heat - Idunn was ready to roll.

After careful consideration she let me know that she needed to put a little wear on the sides of her tires. She gets really bored with running the straight roads where she is now living. We discussed it for a while and agreed that the southern route to Socorro, while slower, was the proper thing for this day. Sadly, there is no way to get there without lots of this:

Arrival at Riding Headquarters

After an overnight stop in Portales (sorry, no pics - Sunset, jump in here) Idunn got to exercise her sidewalls a little bit while we played on 380. In spite of the NMDOT thinking that speed limits should be set for 95 year old quadraplegics driving old John Deere tractors - come on DOT, 45 MPH in the boonies????

OK, I'll quit ranting about the brain dead.

Anyway, we finally arrive at our weekend destination. We are immediately greeted by the most aggressive security agent on the planet. The level of protection provided is better than Fort Knox. You don't want to mess with this highly trained professional.

I was finally allowed unfettered entry into the headquarters where I met with our host.

As you can easily see, he was fantically preparing for the onslaught.

Since I was there early to help with the last minute preparations, I thoughtfully spent the next day trying to wear out the carpet between the couch and the toilet. (be VERY thankful that there are no pictures from that day!). Note to Socorro visitors - do not order delivery pizza!!!

So those that showed up expecting a professionally prepared course, you can blame me. However, I considered it in your best interest to not have a trail with slimy, stinky stuff every few feet.

The Mayhem Begins

You know that you are with an ADV group when the first 8 players are from 4 different states. Who the heck else would ride 10-12 hours for a beer? OK, there were brats and corn, but not as much as beer.

First there is Toots from Portales (Sunset_Ryder):

Our honorable (?) host on his 650 tractor trying to run the spectators:

Craig (Buddy Holly) trying to tame a YZ250:

The Mayhem Continues

Denver Ken (=o&o>) who we all wish would learn how to type a REAL user name instead of cryptography, scaring himself on the XT. Note: you should have seen him doing this on his F800!

Of course, with any group of riders the most fierce competition comes in the pits. That is where we separate the amatuers from the pros with 'pit racing'. Due to the gore involved in that competition, this is the only picture that can be shared with a sensitive audience. But, trust me, it got nasty.

Well, maybe only to the participants. Looks like Connie found it more interesting to eat and check her horoscope. Sorry Connie.

All Good Things Come to an End

Sunday Morning Coming Down........ hmmmmm... that would make a good song title.

A quick cup of coffee, a slice of Tabasco quiche and Idunn tells me that she wants to stretch her legs on the way back home. So, the interstate it is. No time to take pics when she gets ready to cover some real estate in a hurry. It is nice to have 75MPH speed limits that can be easily stretched to 85. Only one picture taken during the whole return run.

Pulled into a rest area somewhere in NM and spot a GS sitting under the ONLY tree in the area. Pull up and sure enough - there is the ADV sticker on the windscreen.

Talked for a little while and he was from Vermont completing a month long trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back. With as many interesting places as he could stuff in along the way.

Here is Tim the Plumber who is a lurker who hasn't even signed up yet. TIM - stop using your brother's account and sign up so you can give us a ride report on your trip.

Oops

I left out one important picture.

The Kansas contingent showing up with beer and carrots. (If you have to ask, you will never understand.)

Pheh. Cooking corn is way more dangerous than riding motorcycles.
