Are bikes getting cheaper?

Are prices starting to come down a bit?

Today I was reading that the Honda NC700SA (the naked street bike that is one "platform" for the new 700cc parallel twin) will be priced at $8,500.

Then saw that the re-vamped KTM 690 Duke is heaps cheaper than the previous model at $11,000.

Admittedly these prices are without on road costs but both seem like pretty good value to me.

A sign of better things to come, perhaps?

The road bikes i've noticed are coming down, but adventure bikes prices, even for old ones with high kilometers have some crazy prices going.

Superduke 2006 990 - $8000-9000
KTM 990 Adventure 2006 - $12-14000
Despite the ADV only being 1k higher when new... Even the 2003-2004 variety of adventures have over 10k asking prices.

New bikes are getting cheaper.

When I bought my KLR new in 09 I worked really hard on the dealership over several weeks to get it for $9100 ride away. Now you can buy one for $7500 ride away.

Makes second hand KLRs of the older generation look positively overpriced around $5K.. even my 09 with 15,000 on the clock is only worth around $5K at the most second hand. (Including a gazillion dollars worth of farkles)

It is because the Australian Dollar is strong right now, when exchanged against other overseas currencies.

Really, which news are you watching?

Australian shares and the dollar rose today and the unemployment rate dropped.

KTM have cut the price of the Duke and fitted some less expensive parts to it to achieve that and bring it into line with the new smaller India made Dukes. Story on it in AMCN I think and probably what Woopwoop was reading.

Salesman at the Honda shop said these could be had for 8k ride away without any provoking. Thought that to be pretty cheap motoring.

So Honda will pay you $8k to take away one of their Harley-clones?
Sounds fair. You don't have to actually have it registered in your own name though, do you?

Unemployment dropped? Yeah, right! Only if you're plugged into Juliar's butt-cheek broadcasting service!
Full-time employment also dropped - meaning that there's more people either given up looking or part-time (under-) employed.
I probably know more middle-aged married men who are "self-employed" - meaning they're doing whatever they can to earn a living - than have a regular 8-5, 5-day a week job with super, sick-pay and an annual holiday.

Either way I'm not convinced it's just about the exchange rate.

In various American forums there've been quite a few comments about the unexpectedly low price of those NC Honda twins. I suspect Honda may be taking a long term view and expect that new parallel twin to be around for a very long time....it's in three different bikes already.

That CBR250R is also a lot of bike for the money and if that CRF250L (same motor) is priced around the same, I reckon they'll sell heaps of them. (I know the're heavy but the intended market is young people who want to ride an "enduro" rather than a "sports bike" to the office & back.

I think the 250L is going for about 6K

The local Honda shop in Gympie had a "chopper build off" with a couple of those. Might slip out and have a look tomorrow. Regardless of taste looks like some nice work. Check out the mufflers made by a local at Meerkat Mufflers.

Globally, there has been a huge slump in bike sales. Some bike shops in the us are down over 40%, and remember some of these shops sell more bikes in a year than we sell in the whole of Oz....
Combined with a huge drop in accessory and gear sales here due to the overall downturn and the fact that WE use bike shops as clothes racks then buy off the net for cheaper, and of course all bikes are going to get cheaper, due to dealer and importer pressure. Think about how many bike shops have gone under in the last few years, then imagine how much those still around are struggling. It all flows back up the chain, as well as down, making second hand bikes cheaper too.

Hey Woopwoop have you seen one of the new NC700 naked or Integras in the flesh? Haven't seen any down here yet.
