What makes the R1200R such a poor seller?

IMO it's the best of, but that's not a sentiment shared by new buyers if I'm to believe various BMW dealerships.

I had a difficult time finding mine, no problem finding the Classic version, but mine - not so much.

What makes it so? Is it the do everything but nothing well? Could it be the lack of protection the RT offers or the off road capability of the GS?

I like naked bikes and with a proper windscreen there's plenty of protection, it's lighter than a RT with most everything else the same, it is better at the twisties than a GS and lower to the ground for stability, and it can go off road if need be.

Your thoughts?

Great bike, but smallish fuel capacity. For a few dollars more per month (many folks shop that way) you can get into the GS. The GS sells because of the cool factor of off-road potential. I have always believed the GS to be a touring bike for people who didn't want to admit they wanted a touring bike.

Hell, I liked the R850R I had. Was a fun bike.

Always liked the R versions, but there are so many competitors in that segment I think it just gets lost.

Because I can't afford it. If I could it would sell better.

Simple: Americans don't buy many naked bikes, standards or supermotos. I've owned several, and each one was a disappointment in terms of sales for the manufacturer.

The majority of Americans buy cruisers or streetfighters. But I'm thinking the trend is changing a bit...hopefully.

Because it's a steak when the market wants a hamburger. I think BMW should bring back the R90 in a similar fashion to what Moto Guzzi has done with the V7.

The same issue pops up all the time about the RS/ST, and I have always thought that the problem is that the RT and GS do everything so well that for many riders there's no reason to get a different model. And the GS is a benchmark design to boot.

But I like BMW's orphans, and Ducati's (i.e. the ST2 and Paso).

I love em

Hey i don't know much about the bike. I have ridden a 1200GS and a r1200s and they are great. I love the boxer twin. The styling the finish and the sound it's a great machine. BMW's are great I wish i had one.
I do really like my ST though.
That's a keeper.

Thanks!

That's the standard comfort seat, no changes from stock.

2012 has this as the OEM.

A guy walks into the BMW showroom to buy a GS because he fantasizes about a RTW trip that will never happen.

A guy walks into the BMW showroom to buy an RT because he fantasizes about his annual cross country trips that will never happen.

A guy walks into the BMW showroom to buy an S1000RR because he fantasizes about having a big pecker (okay, he fantasizes about winning the Superbike Championship.)

What does the guy walking into the showroom to buy the R1200R fantasize about? It is merely a very beautiful, very competent motorcycle. Blech, who would want such a thing?

If BMW wants to sell R1200R bikes, they better start spending some $$$$ in product placements so the general public can see James Bond, the Terminator, the Transporter, and maybe CarrotTop riding them. Then a guy can walk into the BMW showroom to buy an R1200R because he fantasizes about all the women with whom he will score because he rides the cool guys' motorcycle.

Until that happens, the only people buying them will be guys who want a very beautiful, very competent motorcycle. And there aren't too many of those stupid f*****s around.

(Yes, I love the R1200R. But I'm kind of a stupid f*****.)
