I can't remember what the gearing on my ktm was but top speed was not an issue. :) it was getting the pig slowed down from the mid 120's.

It's getting closer! My bike build is done and tested. I rode 250 miles on it this past weekend and it is fantastic. 450X with 450R head, cam, carb. ASR suspension, GPR, etc. I have a mousse in front so I can get used to riding with one (will install a fresh one for the race). BD Squadron LED light installed (it is so bright it will blind you in the daytime). Reservations made, entry paid, fitness program in full swing. Been riding lots as well. I am so ready I want to go now! Pretty much think about it non-stop. How's everyone else's plans coming along?

Have you decided on what gearing? I know this question has come up before, but it is really the last decision I need to make on the bike set-up. I ran 14/46 last weekend and rode some long high speed stuff. The GPS said top speed for the day was 83 mph. Really thinking I should go ahead with 15/46, not for more top speed, but just to relax the rpm a bit. I am staying in a Beatty hotel Wednesday and Thursday night. I figure the extra cost is worth it, not having to drive too far the day before and wearing myself out. I also think my main concern is staying hydrated and fed. I find that I should not go more than two hours without something in my stomach. I plan on keeping the camelback full of straight water, then drinking a bottle of water/Hammer Perpetuem mix at each pit (this way the Perpetuem will be fresh and cold, it upsets my stomach if it is warm). I also really like the "Clif" brand Shot Bloks (energy chews). After that, the cooler in the truck will have all kinds of food so I can decide what to eat (or not) when I want it. I have bought fresh tires and UHD tubes for my spare wheels. My wife has a 250X, and I will probably freak out at the last minute and strip it for all of its parts to bring along as spares! I am thinking that the goal (if all goes really well) is to shoot for a 40 mph average. I don't have a speedo, (don't want the distraction), but I will have the chase crew calc ave. mph and let me know were I am about every 100 miles. I find that I can average 30+ mph for long periods on moto specific terrain (mix of open roads and single track, desert). My biggest concern terrain wise is the silt beds. But, after all is said and done, it's riding dirt bikes. Which I do for fun! I race to challenge myself, but to me this is a challenge to finish. Doesn't matter if I am the last guy in, I just want to see if I can go the distance. |

Lots of people will ask why I don't just go out to the desert on my own and try to ride 500 miles. Why enter a big race which is probably a little over my head? I compare it to once when I was a kid my Boy Scout troupe had a big canoe trip planned but in order to go on the trip you needed to pass a swimming test which was something like 4 times across our town's public pool without stopping. I tried on my own to see if I could do it but I tried it in the shallow end where if I got tired I could put a foot down. I couldn't make it more than once across and had to stop to rest. The day of the test came and of course we had to of course do it on the deep end. With no option but to keep swimming or yell for the lifeguard I had to just keep swimming and I surprised myself by passing the test with relative ease. So, V2R is kind of like that, throwing myself into the deep end and and making myself pass the test. I may give you a "race" to be the last guy in though
