I don't have a Montana, only my trusty 478.
But since this is AdvRider, I DO have an opinion. ![]() From the specs, it sure seems that the Montana surpasses the 478 in the capabilities of interest to motorcyclists. Unless you want a backup device, or unless you use your 478 for its marine applications, I'd sell it.

I did it, sort of. I've still got both (478 +650t) and am trying to decide which I like.

Riding is my passion
|
The 650T is the first Garmin GPS in awhile that really interests me.
I've got the 376c & 478 and bought a 60csx just to have something that did a better job at storing track logs on the card, but I hate navigating from it. I've been reading the 650T threads, but I think I'd still be hard pressed to let my beloved 478 go. I think I would just carry the 650T instead of the 60csx as a backup. My wife carries the 376c when she rides with me.

Any more input on this topic guys.
I would really love to hear some specific input from other 478 owners. I'm currently trying to size up the Montana and determine if I'd rather have it than a 478. I'm going to go either one way or the other. I'm a PN-60w owner, but the screen is just WAY too small for motorcycle use. I'll keep the PN60 for backpacking / hiking. Obviously some ways the Montana outshines the GPSMAP 478 are... Use of AA batteries (huge plus in my eyes Use of SD cards over Garmin specific memory stick (another huge plus) 200 vs 50 routes (this is not huge to me, but noteworthy for people who make routes) How about the tracklogs? they both look like they are 10,000 points. Are they devices equal here? What about the general ease of use? Just trying to drum up some thought provoking thought there.

I got rid of my 478 long before I picked up my 650t. Never did miss that clunky 478. Real happy with the 650t.

I've got the 276c and a 650 but still learning the 650 so it isn't on my bike yet.

I reluctantly replaced my trusty, old 276C with a Montana 600 4-5 months ago and haven't used the 276C since. FatWife has been using my old 276C on her GS but she wants her own Montana. I used to really like my old dial-type land line phone but don't use that any more either.

So the vibe i'm getting is that the Montana can do pretty much every, just about as well, or if not better.
Anyone saying otherwise? |

![]() This week I went from a Montana 650 to a Garmin Quest. Really. Found the Quest for $15 on Kijiji. Kept my Montana too, of course, but I just like seeing how other gps units work. The Quest is pretty decent, though it's from back in 2005.
