Going in to the Clarence

Is anyone planning on going in to the Clarence on Monday/Tuesday 19th/20 Jan?

Have an opportunity to go in so am trying to get access, but was wondering if anyone else happens to be going in for a ride as well?

Any updates on trail conditions recently?

Cheers.

I'd expect temps in mid 30's during January, unless they've had a day or so of rain in there. That valley seems to have it's own climate - either sub zero or hot as hell. Normally a good 10 deg hotter than Kaikoura on the same day.
No worries if solo, but drink lots of water.
The track is reported to be good condition this year, but plenty of dust, quite powdery in sections from Horse Flat through to Goose Flat (northern end of valley.)

Talk to DOC office in Marlborough re access (03- 5729100) or try direct by contacting Muzzle Station on 03 3195791 at other times apart from standard "open weekends". You just pay standard access fee and normally get a key and fill out intentions/permission form from DOC in Kaikoura though.

I'm surprised of the dates you mention.

Last year Clintz and I did it on the 1st weekend opening.

I was led believe that the Clarence is only open on the weekends. Saturday 7.00am? to Sunday 7.00pm during January.

Maybe they have changed.

If there is any possibility of rain, I was told that the track will stay shut.

We rode out Sunday and the following Tuesday, they had over 100mm of rain

Hi Chris,

My understanding is that you can negotiate access at any time. DOC, however, organised 5 open weekends in Jan/Feb over the last few years. They are apparently not doing this this year.

I'm intending to go in 30th Jan & overnight it there on my way down to Bannockburn.

The DOC website is advertising contacting Muzzle Station direct now. Just having problems with contacting them...

I spoke to DOC 2 days ago and they advised me to contact direct as they are not operating the open weekends any more.
Am looking at Waitangi weekend for a visit

I got hold of Muzzle Station today. They email out a details form and you pay $25 gate fee. All good to go.

Is it a fee per bike or per group ?

Fee is per vehicle. A car is $50. A bit steeper than other gate fees I've paid for in the past...

Doc paid the fee for a couple of years didnt they? When that stopped very very few people went in.So a couple of times we went in the re were doc people there but spent just about all the time waiting around.I think 25 dollars is well worth it say compared to rainbow

Awsome photos.

Am currently in Motueka getting a new rear tyre put on the bike. I took my daughter up the Porika track yesterday and there just wasn't enough tread left. Made for hard ride.

Going over to Takaka after lunch. Might head up to the Cobb dam. Then rock climbing for the afternoon.

Tomorrow's plan is to head through Rainbow, Sedgemere track, Molesworth and then around to the Clarence in the afternoon. Looking forward to it...
