Questor rides Mobius 9.230769231
Hello All.
As many of you may know, Dr. Rock and LDF have been doing the Mobius ride for four years now. They are now on part nine, or Mobius 9. ![]() Linky: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344776 So last week Dr. Rock and LDF flew out to Idaho Falls to continue their tremendous journey, and I took a day off from work so I could ride with them for three days - hence the Mobius 9.230769231. (3 / 13 = 230769231) ![]() I've known the "Rocks" for about five years now, and aside from a short morning in Nova Scotia, this was the first time I was able to ride with them. I was looking forward to learning some of their secrets of how to have a "Five Star" camping experience, as well as benefiting from the excessive planning that results in some of the best riding routes possible. I was not disappointed. It all started on the evening of May 11th when I picked them up at the Idaho Falls airport. They piled into the Element, we stopped at a few stores to get supplies, and drove to Casa Questor. It was about 7:30 when we got to my place. A fellow ADV rider "AlbertaStrom" was already there with his DR-650. We immediately started cooking food so we could spend the night getting the bikes ready for our departure the next morning. First things first. A toast to Mobius 9! ![]() ![]() Take and Bake pizza's to feed four hungry ADVriders. ![]() A little while later... ![]() A back yard dinner with perfect weather. ![]() ![]() Once fed Dr. Rock spent hours getting the bikes ready. ![]() Remember, the two DRZ-400's had been in storage at my house since last September. They had lots of things that needed to be fixed. Radiators, heated grip elements, and other stuff. Mr. Purr sat on my Super Enduro and watched. ![]() (He loves the Renazco reat... Dr. Rock worked late into the evening... ![]() Tomorrow we would hit the trails. ![]() Stay tuned... Q~

Day 1: May 12th, 2012 - Part 1
I awoke to the smell of coffee..
What the? Wait why is everybody up? Oh that's right, Dr. Rock and LDF are on Eastern time. They've been awake for hours and are already working on their bikes again. So I get up, and groggily wander into the kitchen and make myself a cup of coffee. The two DRZ's have been in storage for over eight months and are a bit slow to wake up. The batteries were kept on tenders, and the fuel had had Stabil added, but still, it can be tricky waking up bikes after hyper sleep. Dr. Rock has apparently spent most of the night working on the bikes... But I had a few aftermarket parts to install on the Super Enduro as well. Here they are on the Super Enduro. ![]() Cut and Paste from the Mobius Thread: "Their product has proven to be the single best upgrade to any dual-sport, adventure touring, off-road, or dirtbike. EVER. They are proven to increase horsepower, torque, acceleration, top speed, fuel efficiency and braking power. At the same time, they decrease the likelihood of rain, flat tires, and road closures. As a bonus, they are precisely engineered, light-weight, field-serviceable, exquisitely designed, and stunningly beautiful. "They totally make life worth living". ![]() Ladies and gentlemen... ...LINK" I was able to ask a few questions of the manufacturer, and were also informed of the fact that these tassels also repel rhinoceros and inhibit their ability to charge at you. And I must admit I was skeptical... But I have to admit that by the end of the ride I was convinced! It's amazing! I didn't see a single rhinoceros on the entire trip. Now we push them outside and try to get them started. ![]() Blueberry (DLF's bike) starts right up. ![]() But Honneybee (Dr. Rocks bike), is still in napping mode. We use the Element for extra battery power and after a few more attempts... It's ALIVE!!! ![]() So we finish packing the bikes, and get our gear on. We move the bikes to the driveway and take our first group portrait. ![]() Mobius 9 has begun! ![]() Then we head to our first stop of the day... ![]() A gas station. Hey, the bikes were thirsty... More to come... Q~

Day 1: May 12th, 2012 - Part 2
Ok. We fill up on gas, and get this part started...
Don't stop this party ![]() Let's Go!!! ![]() Even if you wanted you you couldn't stop us now! ![]() Our route takes us in a small loop beyond Wolverine Canyon and into the low hills to the East of Idaho Falls. ![]() I ain't gonna stop until I drop. ![]() ![]() It's been dry here in Idaho for weeks now and the roads are dusty... It's best to stay about 45 seconds behind the person in front of you. ![]() We stop for a snack and pee break. The bikes are happy to be outside and running free. ![]() We ride up over a small ridge. ![]() ![]() And into the long valley beyond. ![]() This is Super Enduro country. ![]() ![]() Infinite sight lines... hard pack dirt roads... ![]() This area is about 20 minutes outside of town. Some evenings, when I just need to get away from everything and leave my busy thoughts behind, I take the Super Enduro out here, and just let it rip! Full throttle, sixth gear, a 42 tooth rear sprocket, and total confidence in your machine, you can do amazing things... The world underneath you becomes a blur...![]() But today... this is a group ride... a Mobius ride. ![]() So we are content to just roll along and take in the sights. ![]() Mountains in the distance to the North. ![]() We head to the West and climb up over a ridge. ![]() The Aspen trees are just starting to leaf out. ![]() We ride down into the valley below. ![]() A little further down the road we come to the ghost town of Chesterfield Idaho. ![]() Located along the Oregon Trail, it was founded in 1881. It was later abandoned in the 1930's. More Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesterfield,_Idaho Here's a few pictures of some of the historic buildings. ![]() ![]() LDF was having a calm moment and was just taking it all in. ![]() After a brief stop, we continued along our route. ![]() Gotta have cows... ![]() We follow our route up into Pebble Canyon... ![]() But soon we come to this... ![]() WTF? ![]() ![]() Oh no! ![]() Today is May 12th. We are two days early. ![]() Crap. We have to turn around and re-route. We get onto some pavement and have to wait for a train... ![]() But soon we are back on dirt. ![]() But we did come to another closed gate, and were forced to take pavement again... anyway, let's just enjoy the scenery... ![]() We stop in McCammon to get food for dinner. ![]() It's here that I find a prize! ![]() I've been talking to Eric at Wolfman Luggage and have told him of my routine... I use the "Wolf Bottle Holders". I have four of them on my luggage. One for 33oz of fuel for the stove, one for 33oz of Motor Oil, one for a 24oz bottle of spray chain lube, and one for.... ![]() ![]() YES!!! Perfect fit! ![]() ![]() Thanks for making great product Mr. Wolfman! So we stock up on supplies and continue on to the next leg of our journey. ![]() Great scenery and perfect weather. ![]() We turn left onto Walker creek road, but soon it ends... ![]() Where do we go? Google Maps shows a dirt road... but it's gone... We look around and find this trail... ![]() Ar first it's flat and easy... but soon it starts crossing a stream... ![]() And then it starts to climb, and the traction becomes loose. We meet two other trail riders on two stroke 125's and they look at us like we are crazy riding 500 pound bikes loaded with luggage.... We try a bit longer... But soon it's just too risky. We have had multiple tip overs, and the final straw was when AlbertaStrom slides out, and rolls backwards down the trail with the front brake locked, and his rear wheel goes over the edge... It's tempting to try again, but we all agree this is silly... It's not worth breaking bikes or bodies to get over this ridge. This is a far as we get. ![]() We all turn around and head back the way we came... A few miles back down the trail we find a nice campsite and decide to call it a day. I unpack the bike and set up camp. ![]() The Rocks set about making a campfire and setting up the "comfort zone". These guys have this part of motorcycle camping dialed in. There is a lot I need to learn from them... My trips tend to be a military death march. The Rocks are more like a luxury cruse. Folding Chairs, linen napkins, deserts... WOW! ![]() It's now time for the "Victory Beer". ![]() ![]() The steaks and potatoes are wrapped in foil and placed on the coals to cook. ![]() And in about 45 minutes it's feeding time! Yeup, baked potatoes with melted cheese and a bacon wrapped beef fillet. ![]() ![]() We all relax and talk about the day. ![]() Evening becomes night and we discuss philosophical thoughts. ![]() ![]() So we had a few set backs, but all in all it was still a great day. It's so good to be riding with good friends in wonderful places... I had almost forgotten how nice it can be. More to come. Q~
