I used to have a boy sprouts cable saw that consisted of a spiked piece of wire with rings on each end. Might be time to find something like that to carry with you.

You got that right. Actually in some ways the older I get the less discomforts, pains and inconveniences trouble me....maybe just gettin' more numb

There are also some very small fold up bow saws I have seen somewhere that may fit fine in a side case. Seems like one is just over a foot long and folds up into a little case ( Sven Saw I think) not much bigger than a good sized tire iron.
