Africa Twin RD07a MY99 rebuild thread

Well lads,

I bought an Africa twin a few months back for good money considering it has breach in the water jacket so water from the cooling system goes straight into the exhaust and out the back. It came with another engine but the bottom end had faied at some point in that one. I don't mind as the one in the bike was running and had head gasket failure and a possable cracked cylinder so I'll use the head and cylinder off the other engine. Happy days.

Today I order the new cylinder gaskets and the head gaskets and the new piston rings so I'll be sorting the engine next week when the parts arrive.

This is her the day I got it.

Let the stripping begin.

Drop the engine oil and water from the engine.

Engine out.

The rear wheel was dangerous on it to say the least with spokes missing and others pulling away from the rim because ok corrosion so the lad that sold me the bike sourced me an RD07 rim. It was gold in colour and the tyre was shot so I fitted the tyre that was on the bike and sprayed the rim black. I'll be doing the same with the front rim.

I'll update as I go. :

Saddle recovered.

used one peace leather as it rains here all the time and this will help waterproofing of the new foam seat.

Got a full new set of decals made up by Image Works UK. Went with a slight colour change to the decals as I'm changing the colour of the bike.

I do like to watch a good strip, especially when it's a beautiful lady like an AT.
Best of luck, and keep the pictures coming.

Got it from Image Works in the UK. Cost me £60 sterling.

I was in with Honda today and paid for the engine parts so as soon as their here the work will begin on the engines.

I bought all the paints needed for the job of refurbishing the plastics and the tank. Started them this evening.

I also gave the front wheel a lick of paint but I will be changing them to SM rims and stainless spokes in the near future.

Here's a few pics.

You'll notice a ghost of the old decal on the painted fairing and this has been done on purpose so I had a guide to fitting the new ones and I thought it would also help them stand out a bit more. The colour I went for is a VW Golf colour called united Grey and I when with a black and red decal.

The front wheel.

Fairing still needs a finish coat so hope to get that done tomorrow and make a start on the tank.
