Rally Tyres
Hi Guys,
what tyres do you use when racing on Rally? I know there are a few aspects which need to be considered but lets stick with the basics, I have KTM 690 R with a rally kit which is a mid weight rally bike, always with mousse so lets focus on the terrain only: - dry and rocky - hard - soft and muddy - sand (desert) Sofar I did mostly hard, rocky with Maxxis M-7304/5D, the rear was ok, lasted pretty long but I was not much impressed with the front one. Could you please share your experience? Cheers, David |

Most people use the Mich Deserts for rallying. They are allround sucky but consistently so and the tire carcass is very durable. You can ride that tire on razors and knives without issues. They have recently launched the Desert Race, more designed for the 450 class bikes in the Dakar with a more aggressive pattern.

If Used with the bib moose it is the Best tire all around. To bad that the 140/80/18 for the big bikes is being Droped from the line.

David,
You might want to look into a tire that is made in your country. The Mitas E09 is similar to the michelin desert and made in the Czech Republic. -John

Ditto. Brilliant tyres on the 690RR, for which they were designed......backing into corners is amazing on the Desert's, the front wears a little fast but sticks.

Haha, my point exactly. It doesn't offer good grip anywhere bit is even on all terrains. Consistent. And excellent resistance with the desert mousse.

Thanks guys,
I am really curious if anybody uses something else than Michelin Desert. I dont know how about in USA but I can buy two Maxxis tyres for the price of one M.Desert. I am not looking for the cheapest solution but I am surprised that only Michelin would make good rally tyres. |

Maybe a pic would help. Here is a Mitas E09 with about 1200 miles on it in baja.

Motoz tires are very durable and offer several different tire compounds. The mich Deserts are very tough and you will get many miles out of them. Once you learn how they do sacrifice some performance in order to gain incredible longevity. We used one rear tire for the Australian Safari.....well 5/7 days.

Thanks buddy, I know them and I used to use them when riding my Trannie in Australia, to me they are very suitable for both tarmac and rather soft offroad. Very hard and durable. I might give it another go. Dont know how they go along with big moussee.
It looks like M.Desers are really the most used. Seems like it is time to try them out. cheers. David |

I did the German Baja300 last weekend on an XR400, with an Pirelli Scorpion XC on the rear and a Scorpoin enduro tire on the front, and Italian TechnoMousses in it. Worked fine for me, but some people
had bad experiences with the TechnoMousses Dunlop has a 908RR that is used in the Dakar as well, that seems to be really tough.
