Something a little different!!

been away for a few days doing a trip on the Main Salmon wilderness section, about 80 miles of rafting... the water was moderately high at 32000cfs which made it fun and gave the run some kick!... anyway, home now and hoping some of the snow has melted so I can start planning some rides for more challenge sites... since this thread is titled "a touch of Idaho" and rafting the Salmon is part of that... here are a few pics...

we parked our rigs at Vinegar Creek and did a Jet-up to Corn Creek... then floated back down to our rigs... only way to go, saves about 800 miles of driving... here we're loading our rafts, kayaks and 14 people on the Jet boat at Vinegar...

rigging up at Corn Creek... ready to get going...

we used Arctic Creek for our Jet-up, this boat can haul a ton of gear!

it's a tough life on the river... you can see how we're suffering...

scouting out Chittum rapid... it was big and pushy!

here's a short video of Chittum...
Photobucket

fun trip and a nice diversion... now, lets get back to some ridin!!

Had a Beautiful Monday so I took off to knock off a Challenge site. Easy day 106 mile round trip to Danskin Look Out

Saw three of these little fellows, but he's the only one I got a picture of.

Gate was locked and the LO is occupied; just they don't want company

That's Prairie way over there

The road coming and going

Discovered this interesting trail, but didn't take it

Didn't notice this on the way out but going east to west (D'uh) this started cropping up didn't see these last year.

Didn't see a soul out there the whole ride

Hey Silverspurs! I've been meaning to read your thread for quite sometime now. Finally got all my writing done from my Cali trip, so I had a few minutes tonight.

Wow, have you hit some challenge points already this year! I finally got going last weekend. Been riding all year of course, but now it's time to start taking pics of that blue bandanna.

You get some really nice photos and I have enjoyed the read so far. Hopefully, we'll get together for a ride sometime soon. I'm not sure if we've even met yet. Maybe at one of the club functions briefly.

I guess I'm heading out solo this weekend. Can't get anyone to go with me. I'm pretty much the only person I know of in Boise that is single with no kids. I think I'll head to Northern Nevada. Can't wait to ride FR 67! Glad you shared about that! Take care. Tyson

340 heads into the Danskin OHV. Awesome single track in there. Takes you right down to the edge of the canyon. Sweet ride.

Still have NEVER seen a rattlesnake in the wild. In ALL my outdoor adventures over the years in many places where snakes live, I have NEVER seen one. It's getting a bit weird at this point.

I was stationed at Mountain Home AFB 1972 - 1973. Drove a AMC Gremlin X to Silver City, over two hours to go the 20 miles. Silver City does not look like it change much in the past 40 years.

Are the Indian Bath Tubs hot springs still open? When I was station in ID the springs where open to the public.

Still there but the road has regressed though

Here's the link to a good read to the Hot Springs

6-30-12 Packer John, No Business, Sheep Rock Point

6/29&30/12

A few weeks ago, I tried to get into Sheep Rock Overlook on Idaho side of Hells Canyon. I was blocked by snow and couldn't get in. This past weekend My friend Trent and I decided to give it another try and also collect some other IAMC challenge points.

We decided we would visit Packer John LO which sits a few miles South of Smiths Ferry Idaho, just East of Hiway 55 and then try to get to a Hot Spring Trent knows about for our camp that first night. We left a bit later than we had planned on Friday, so we were caught in the Mad House traffic that is Hiway 55 on a Friday with all the cagers headed to Cascade and McCall for the weekend...

typical Hiway 55 traffic headed to McCall and points North, but the NF Payette river with it's great whitewater makes the ride entertaining, no matter how much or slow the traffic...

Packer John LO, just the foundation is left... the road from Smiths Ferry is an easy level 2 ride

Looking North From Packer John LO to Round and Long Valley's

Looking South From Packer John LO toward the South Fork of the Payette River

For camp on Friday night, Trent knew of a Hot Spring that isn't well known and while it is right off a paved road, there are no signs or markings to identify it... camp sits on a little bench about 50' above the creek and HS...

someone has made some nice improvements to these HS...

what a way to end the day!!

up the next morning and on to our next challenge site, No Business LO West of Donnelly, but first we have to get some lunch to carry in our bags for later!

Looks like there is still some snow up there... hope we can get through!

Turns out the road is fine, no snow to be seen... this is one of the handsomest LO's I've ever been to...

No Business LO is really well maintained, and in a beautiful setting with views of McCall, Cascade and surrounding Mountains, there is some serious Lightening Protection around this place!!

Rich is manning the LO this summer, his second year here. He's from St George Ut. he said he averages about 2500 visitors a year to the LO... Holy Crap!... that's like 40 a day!! that's Council Mountain to the West behind Rich... we'll be riding that way when we leave...

view from No Business LO South East toward Cascade

view North East toward McCall

Next we head West going around Council Mountain to the town of Council were we get fuel and then head over to the Hells Canyon country... we are headed for Sheep Rock Overlook of Hells Canyon and an old mining site/town called Helena... to get there we go from Council to Bear Idaho, and then to Cuprum (pictures of both these places in a previous post on this thread)... this is the mine just above Cuprum... it is the reason Cuprum exists...

the road to Sheep Rock Overlook goes right past the mine and then follows a ridge going North for about 10 miles, it is an easy passenger car road with great views of the Hells Canyon and the Wallowa's of Oregon on the Horizon...

you would never come here by accident, there's nothing else out here... but it is a very scenic drive... well worth the effort!

Sheep Rock has some significance...

there is an interpretive trail you can take that gives history of the area, and provides some outstanding views of Hells canyon... looking North

from here we are headed to an old Copper Mining townsite/mine called Helena. it was active from about 1890 to 1915... there were more than a hundred people living here then and the Seven Devils area's first Post Office, they even tried to build a railroad into here, but went bust... it is so rugged here, it's no wonder they failed!... this is the old mine area at Helena, there is nothing left of the town that we could find. There is a very fun ATV trail down to this mine site... challenging for a big bike but a blast!

Trent had never been down the Kleinschmidt grade or in Hells Canyon, so we decided to head back to Boise down the grade to Oxbow, then take 71 out to Cambridge and home that way... I've posted pictures of those areas previously on this thread, but on the way down the grade I liked the way the afternoon light was playing on the Hess Road on the Oregon side of Hells Canyon and had to take a pic

it was dang hot today!! 97 degrees in Boise, needless to say, when we got down to Oxbow and on the ride home it was a scorcher!... but is was nice up in the Mountains!... another good reason to go there!... fun ride, 4 more challenge sites visited... thanks for coming along!...
