GSPD Rebuilt driveshaft exploded

Less than 12k miles. It was rebuilt by Guy and I am sure he will take care of it as he has been nothing but a stand up guy for all of us.

Just thought everyone would like to see the cool picture

The good thing is, your damn motor can't read. If it says oil on the container, it's pretty much OK to dump in there.... ED.

It is actually my buddies drive shaft. It blew on Sat when he was on a goat trail in Virginia. we were at the RDV so we had access to the vehicle recovery service. We had to U-Haul it back up here on Sunday from the RDV.

I guess the loading and unloading of the rear going up the trail was what did it in. He said that there where no warning signs, it just went and he had 5 more neutrals

Was there hypoid in the swingarm?
My original shaft was failing when I got my GS, the swingarm was full of hypoid and the rubber was swelling and oozing. All is fixed properly (output shaft seal "V" now siliconed). I'm hoping the urethane Guy uses is more resistant.

I'd pour that thing full of solid epoxy resin or weld it. Just not a good design IMO.

Bumpmuncher had the same issue. He bought the chemicals and fixed it himself. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showpos...4&postcount=15

That just won't work for very long. That PU is the cush drive in the system. If you made it a 1 piece, you would just blow up your ring and pinion or the tranny.

Look at any of the BMW drive shafts and you will see that all have some sort of system to act as a cushion to the final drive. Even in the exposed shaft system of the prewar BMW's they had a rubber donut to connect the drive shaft to the trans output shaft.

BMW made plenty of bikes with solid shafts. Here's one from a /6

Also, HPN ditches the cush drive for a solid shaft as well.

Whether or not it would work well on a shaft with 2 U joints is open to debate though as there's a second thrust reaction to deal with.

Now I have to tear mine apart this weekend and see how it looks.

AW, on the /6 and earlier, the only driveline cush was in the input shaft of the tranny.

All 5spd airhead gearboxes had cush drives on the input shafts.
