Overheating

Hello everybody,I am from Mexico City and if I barley post, I am an avid follower of Adv since many years ago. So much that I think ADV is the influence that made me finally buy a 09 990 Adventure.

I love the bike, I am sure this bike will be a classic in 20 years. But I have a big big complain... it overheats by just looking at it.

I commute a lot with it in Mexico City = traffic. With the 990 it's impossible as it will overheat immediately and will start to fail while opening the throttle, I guess it fuel boiling..

The thing is that I really want to make it more useable or reliable. I've read a lot about overheating but I would like to get some advice on where to start. For instance: start by slip on's, if that doesn't work continue with x, y, z.

The bike is stock and I removed the plastic grid from the radiator and purged the cooling system.

Any idea? I will really appreciate it.

Saludos,

Ramon

The dual fan is a good place to start along with the lower temp fan switch.
The akras lower temps a lot, but i don't think it will do much on your scenario.
Finding something to keep the heat of the fuel tank would help too.
Also you might try with TuneECU to see if a richer map helps lowering temps a little.

Altough the best mod is to really really make sure your cooling system is up to par (meaning it doesn't have air)

Alternative Mod

You can cover the inside of the gas tanks with a heat shiels adhesive paper that help the tanks not to absorb lot heat it take some hour to complete the mod but worth the try, you can also cover and the airfilter box to cooler the air that going inside the engine

Thanks guys, I will start with the fan and re-check the air in the system. Does the additional fan makes considerably more noise than the primary fan? I really don't like riding with the fan noise.

Has anyone tried oil radiators? Usually they are very efficient cooling down things.

Thanks.

sounds like you just need to replace the fuel filters on your bike.

Why Steven? How do you jump to that diagnostic? I wouldn't be surprised with Mexican fuel. I will do it.

Thanks

A 990 can get hot but shouldn't overheat, even when stock. Unless maybe in very extreme circumstances...

The fan starts when temperatures rises far before the bike gets at the critical temperature, and the fan should be able to keep the temperature within limits.
Do you really mean overheating (with the 950 this is red warning light and blinking temperature bars)?

If the bike almost immediately overheats, my guess something is wrong. And this should be resolved before going to modifications like extra fan, lower temp fan switch, aftermarket exhausts, heat shields.

Check if your right side fuel tank is missing its heat shield close to front header pipe.

The bike should not run bad, even when really hot. this only happens when the fuel supply goes wrong, and that usually meens fuel boiling inside the filter due to under pressure there. == filter clogged.

For the real heat: the bike runs hot, as long as there is no flashing indicator on the dash it's not overheating. and its very difficult to do so, even with one fan and stock pipes. is it pleasant? No. There are plenty of mods on this forum to get it to run a bit less hot though.

heat

I live in New Orleans, Louisiana. It gets stupid hot here. I installed a second fan, cleaned & burped the coolant system, and installed some heat shield material on the tanks. My 950 doesn't overheat on the trail or in traffic.

Fuel pump could also be responsible.

I had problems the motor was bogging and lurching. After some time I had a dealer diagnose faulty fuel pump. When it gets hot, starts to misbehave. When it cools down, runs O.K.

Thanks guys, I will get into it to make sure there is nothing else wrong before getting the extra fan. It has indeed overheated with the indicator flashing... it was in heavy traffic and not in an extremely hot day (25 C), nothing compared to an average summer day in the US.

Saludos.

I'm betting that you have a problem with your cooling fan. The sound of a properly functioning cooling fan is hardly noticeable, especially while riding.

That would be the first place I'd look. Secondly, check to make sure that your radiator is not packed full of dried mud.

I have a new 2011 with no cooling issues (but have purchased a second fan) and the fan is very noticeable when it comes on while stopped at traffic lights (which is the only time it comes on).
